Another Umpire Story

College team "A" travels 3 1/2 hours to play "B" on Saturday. Umpire 1, at several times during the game, is seen talking to "B" players between plays, which is fine, but never says a word all day to "A" players. Is this automatically favoritism? No. However, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth when he sees a Pinch Runner headed out to first base to run for a "B" girl - so he addresses her by first name "Sally, you're getting a runner"...

How do you think "A" is viewing the officiating? Come on guys - at least act like you're impartial!

Whether there was any favoritism or not, quite often perception is reality.

You would think an umpire at that level would realize this and not do anything that could even remotely be conceived as biased or partial.

Things like this can undermine an umpire's credibility on the field. And if you don't have credibility out there...you ain't got much!

Amen, brother.

I know that we lost because Team "B" hit the snot out of the ball, not because of bad umping. But, as an official, at least give us the impression that there aren't other factors involved....

(And if I may hi-jack my own thread - speaking of Team B; when is the last time anyone saw a Polar Bear roaming the wilds of Ohio?)
