Appropriate Coaching Behavior?

First tournament of the summer season this year - my daughters team was warming up - I decided to watch another 14U game which had just started.

The team out in the field had a pretty bad first inning resulting in a few errors and a few runs. You could tell the girls were beating themselves up over it. They finally got their third out. The coach was so angry he had the girls drop and do pushups in front of their dugout, in front of the other team, in front of the umpire and in front of all the parents.

I can only assume he was the head coach and it was VERY obvious the other coach did not agree with this decision. I have to agree with the other coach - not the time or place for that...

I originally posted this along with a response to the coaches yelling posting and thought I would get clarification ? am I way off base? Is this appropriate behavior?

It is stupid...they are not playing well, so I will wear them out physically as well...

JMHO!

Saw that happen two years ago and the parents pulled their player off the team immediately. Can't say I blame them. Save that stuff for the next practice when it's just your team.

Scott, mean to sound tongue in cheek...I should have put quotes around it like this, "they are playing poorly so I will wear them out physically" - coach.

We had a parent meeting about 2 weeks ago. One of the parents said that they felt that coaching should be done at practice, game time you have to let the girls play as they were coached. The coach should take notes on their performance and bring it up in practice as things they need to work on. I thought that was pretty good advice! JMHO

Coaches still have to coach during games but they have to show leadership. They have to still tell the girls what they did wrong... then tell them how to correct it and go on. The coach is the captian of the ship, as bad as I hate it, when the ship sinks.... the coach has to go down with the ship. You have to $uck it up and ride out the storm. Every team is going to have bad games and when that time comes, there must be a leader guiding the ship. Regardless how the girls play, the coach has to teach them how to win and lose with CLASS!!!! There is nothing classy about degrading your girls in front of another team..... IMHO

We had this happen last season at an indoor scrimmage.(Remember Shelley?) Now usually I would never get involved in a Coaches decision with my dd but that instance My dd said she wasnt doing the push ups and I agreed in was degrading and not the place....Of course this Coach wasnt with us for much longer b/c he was asked to step down. Rightfully so....this didnt take place in Org. my dd is with now.

Why in the world would you punish your team IN THE MIDDLE OF A GAME?! I have sent them on a jog after the game or at practice for lacking in effort, but I cannot imagine zapping their strength on such a negative deterrent during the game...MHO

I would respectfully disagree. John Wooden when asked if he was a teacher first or coach, replied "teacher first, and a teacher second"

Certain things and the pressure of the game can not be duplicated in practice. Coaching and teaching during practice is essential more so these days, due to some kids never practicing on their own, and/or really watching or learning the game. JMHO

I have to disagree with this. Especially at the younger age groups, game time is also a coaching/teaching time. The girls are not at the proper learning stage to have this done.

This is how I was taught the learning phases/steps.

1. Rote
2. Understanding
3. Application
4. Correlation

When your team reaches Step 4., then I would agree. But Steps 1 through 3 require that a coach/teacher be involved to immediately correct deficiencies or those deficiencies will turn into bad habits. And we all know how hard it is to break those bad habits.

That's how I learned it and that is the philosophy that I have used and it works for me. I know we have some educators out there who probably have a more recent definition of the Levels of Learning.

The problem is how coaches correct deficiencies when they happen.

Bad way at wrong time to get their attention...

Sort of like our DD's summer weightlifting... A volleyball coach called them out about something not being put back in the weightroom and that if it happened again, they were all going to run. Yeah right, you're not even her sport coach, kids come and go at different times, so get off your horse lady is what I'd say to her she ain't running...

Whatever works for your team. These girls are very adaptable if the parents stay out of the way.

Not sure if putting the players on public notice DURING a game is such a good idea, but getting their attention with physical labor is. After a sub-par performance at a recent tournament, me and our fellow coaches ran with the players away from the tourney action just to prove that we are all in this together. We win together, we lose together. But push-ups DURING a game on the FIELD? Meh, I think there are other ways besides public humiliation to get a team's attention.
