If were the coach.....no one gets the number. Tell them there are no favorites on the team and each one has to choose a different number.
Ahh, kind of like King Solomon's approach of threatening to split the baby in half.

Hi everyone! Wow, can't believe this thread turned out to have such a shelf life! Since people seem to be interested, all said and done, DD stayed with team. After reading all of your opinions, thinking it over, and laughing hysterically at some of the responses, it seems our focus was turned to watching this thread more than worry about the number. It was good to see that some may have disagreed with us, but more importantly, other's shared our general opinion so our hurt feelings were somewhat validated. DD chose to stay on the team, so nothing more was said to anyone else on the team (just to a couple of non-softball friends). The young lady that took over DDs number ended up being very nice (we never expected otherwise, this wasn't about the other player) and is now a good friend of DDs. DD pitched for the team throughout the season and by fall tryouts decided she wanted to continue to play for the team in 2009, so she obviously has put the issue behind her. She still makes a face whenever her number comes up, but she's never said a thing about it to the new friend who has the number, and the girl has never said anything to her. The issue was never as much about the number itself as it was about how the situation was handled by the coach. In the end she obviously values the new friendship with the girl more than the relationship with the coach or the number. On goes the ups and downs of being a 13 year old! And in the end, it was her decision on whether or not she chose to leave or stay. I think she made a good one.

Our org has the same rule. The player that has been with the org the longest keeps her number.

I am not sure I even see the conflict here. It is a simple rule. And the fact that the girl was a pitcher or OF should have no bearing.

This year on the 16U there where 2 girls that wanted the number 7. Both were with the org the year before, and both wore the number 7. One on 16U and the other on the 14U. The one coming up got to keep the number because she was with the org longer. The older girl was not pleased but she did not put up a stink.

Sheesh, the whole premise of the thread was ridiculous - people contemplating changing teams over a number. BTW, the poster said the other family had been with the org longer - possibly an older sibling.

FWIW, the policy on numbers needs to fit how the org operates regarding uniforms. DD's first org initially left uniforms and numbers up to the individual teams, so seniority on a team made sense so an existing player wouldn't have to alter uniforms they already had. After our first year, the org adopted a new policy of having unique numbers across all 4 teams and standardizing new uniforms so players could easily fill-in and/or showcase on other teams. At that point, players with seniority in the org got first dibs on numbers.

Seniority in the organization does make sense, and I have seen this done in other organizations ... not whose parents own a pole barn or who is a stud pitcher!

We had a similar situation with my daughter's team last year. Both girls were new to the team. The coach flipped a coin and my daughter just dealt with the change. She chose a new number that she'd never seen anyone wear before. I researched her new number and told her the meanings in numerolgy sites- Leadership, strength, and stability. She was ecstatic. I also looked over the number she lost- dispair, troublesome, etc. Whenever her team mate had a bad game, she advised her to change her number because it was bad luck. It was the beginning of a new era in my house! Also turned out, unknowlingly, it was her recently passed grandfather's number in baseball.
