Because of your love of stats Joe we all know that your HS and travel books are accurate. You put the time in to show your players how to do it right and help them from the 3rd base box in determining hits and errors so there is not a schewing of the data. I think it helps players that are taught those things understand the game at a different level than those who are just listening to what Mom and Dad say in the car on the way home about their performance at the plate.

If I'm a college coach considering high school players, I'd rather see a player bat a time or two than all of her batting stats. There's just too much variation in both the level of competition and the way stats are kept to have any one standard, and answering this question could make it a self-fulfilling prophecy!

I think contact percentage, and strikeouts are important. I also look at what a player does in a high pressure ab, game on the line, runners in scoring position with two outs, or late in a close game. In those ab did she make good contact, was she aggressive at pitches in the zone, did she have a good ab or was she over matched.

Marionfastpitch,

It's what I refer to as a players K-Ratio. You take a players total AB's + BB's + HBP"s + SAC's = Total P/A's then divide by number of K's thus equalling there individual K-Ratio. For a high level travel schedule 10-15% K-Ratio is pretty darn good. And if an individual has a single digit K-Ratio you can be sure she is dominate. Again these percentages are given for an elite high level schedule with no local tourneys included. :)

Also power hitters in the 3-6 spot's tend to have a little higher K-Ratio then your crafty 1-2 hitters do...just as major leaguers tend to do...lol.

A low K ratio is nice, but I don't think it's determinative. I think usually a player has a low K ratio because she is a good hitter, not she is a good hitter because she has a low K ratio.

I can name you 4 just off the top of my head............ and coming from the hitting end of things............. a great hitter will almost always win.... just like a great pitcher will,,,,,,,, they just spend alot of time facing medium opponents till they face one another
