I will take the fast smallballers over the big sticks any day of the week. A big shot in the gap is great and has it's place but Fast slappers and short game specialists win games. That is why we work on the short game more than anything. :D

pitching: Jamie Kennedy, Chip Gregg
hitting: Howard and Crystl
Catching: Cindy Bowles did a pretty good job back in the day, not sure where she is now.

I thought, in reviewing this old thread that was revived, that it was interesting no one spoke about coaching the throw. I've learned so much from Crystl and Howard (and from afar, Howard Kobata) about teaching the throwing mechanics and about helping to avoid throwing injuries. I think we have a tendency to believe that, as with speed, a player either has a gun or doesn't. But there is a ton of room for productive coaching when it comes to throwing.

Smallball is very important, but it is nice to have a heavy hitter that has a good average as well come up to bat after them. Now if your longball hitter has a bad average and OBP, then I agree I would rather have more smallball.

Throwing, for me, has been the hardest skill to get right with my daughter. For some reason it just doesn't come easy for her. She recently had a break-through in her understanding so we are on a fair path.

When you watch a team throw so many of them have poor mechanics. Because of that the team does not acquire skills by being around others that do well.

So... agreed.
