http://www.windpitch.com/PitcherCatcherChart.html As catchers you watch batters and know all of this? Before you respond print it out and see how complex calling pitches and situations can be for a player, let alone a GROUP of coaches. I can't but I have this chart and all the coaches watch for different things each batters does and charts it.. We are playing 6 teams this weekend and we have never seen before. It's impossible to scout them. Yes I was a catcher for many years ( baseball), yet I have 12 years of high school and traveling ball experience. In high school we let our catchers call with the coaches input, but in traveling ball, it's too much to expect. I would argue it also depends on the age group you are dealing with.

Why would anyone think there is only 1 correct answer here? ?Different players have different skills and abilities. ?I agree it should always be our goal to teach players as much and whenever possible. ?That being said, watching a few of the games from the College world series, it seemed to me that even at this level coaches were calling a lot of pitches. ?Is every coach out there knowledgeable enough about the game to make the calls, of course not. ?Is every catcher the best person to make the call, or course not. ?As a coach it would seem to me that it is your job to know your personnel and adjust accordingly. ?All the pitching logs in the business and suggested pitches for given situations are not worth the paper they are printed on if your pitcher is unable to throw that pitch with any consistency. How often do you want to throw that change-up if your pitcher really only gets it to work 40% of the time? The same applies to any other pitch.

As a catcher I call pitches and if the coach wants a certain pitch then he just gets my attention and gives me the sign.
The scary part though, is that usually we are thinking the same things.
As a catcher I feel i can read a batter and know my pitcher better than the coach. You can have memorized that pitching chart completely but what happens when you have a batter who is three or four of those characteristics, and a situation, and they all say to throw different pitches?
It is no disrepect to a coaches knowledge of the game or their experience, its just catchers have to learn to read the batter too. When they can then they will be just as succesful or maybe even more succesful than the coach at calling pitches.

We have a catcher that is learning how to control a game but she is a very good catcher so usually we call most of a game but will try to hand over to her in the later innings so she can learn from it. Hopefully she can call a whole game without a problem later in the summer. We look at it as a teaching and learning experience.

Who calls the pitches

Does a catcher call the pitches ? If so what age group do they start?

Or does the coach call the pitches?

Do catchers in college call the pitches?

Obviously, calling pitches depends on the catcher's ability to do so, properly & successfully. ?My question is, do we really want to put that much pressure on our catchers?? ?Especially the younger girls, even at 14U...I think its questionable. ?They have so much to concentrate on as it is and the catcher carries a heavy load. ?Coaches calling pitches has its advantages, especially for the catcher. ?
