Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Calling pitches

I called pitches in High School Baseball a few years. Location was more important the what pitch to throw. We tried to get the hitter to HIT our pitch. Now that I have a DD playing fastpitch, I never see coaches calling pitches that way. Every pitch trying to get the batter to MISS. I've seen my DD's high school coach chew on his DD for letting a batter hit a dink ground ball. I think catchers, pitchers and coaches should work together. When I called pitches as a coach, if he hit the spot and got hit hard it was my fault. If he missed his spot and got hit hard it was his fault.

Agreed! A good catcher can help to make a mediocre pitcher look great! And a bad catcher can make a great pitcher look mediocre. The catchers are so important...definitely not under appreciated by this pitcher =)

I love my dd's catcher!! And I sure hope that I and my dd tell her so often enough!! :yahoo:

I believe all pitchers need to know how to call their own game. I start my pitchers out learning the craft of calling pitches because I feel it gives the pitcher the power over her game. The pitcher has to be confident in herself and her pitches at any given time. Coaches can't always see where the batter is in the box. My coaches wanted me to use my brain out there and calculate my next move. It worked for me 4 State Championships and a full scholarship Div I.
