Is the Compuware field for 2009 completed yet?
What are the tourney dates?
How many teams from Ohio made it, and how many did not?

Not sure if the field is complete.
The dates are June 18-21.
Ohio Dragons 12u, 14u and 16u are all in.

You have to submit your registration form and make a case to get invited.

16u Nightmare ........closed out the 2nd year in a row!!!

Maybe we shouldn't of went 2-0 v.s. the 16u Michigan ASA State Champs last year!

We did get a nice rejection letter, exact same letter from last year:)

:( If registration isn't sent in August, you most likely are too late.

Wow, What more do teams like the Nightmare who have made a legitimate name for themselves need to do? I think Compuware just pulls the file drawer from the year prior and if you resend you are in. Saw some great teams up there these last few years and some so... so....

I think that is part of it - if you were there before, you are usually back the next year if you choose to be.

The GC Nightmare are an OUTSTANDING team, and definitely should be there. Their weakness? - Not a "large" organization. I get the sense that larger organizations, with strong organizational names get priority because they can fill multiple age slots year after year, and thus bringing "predictably" excellent talent and competitive play (that college coaches will be "geeked" over and see time/value).

For single teams, it is tough unless you have a HUGE name, or a marketing department. Not justifying it, just expressing opinion from past experience.

If I were trying to get my single team into Compuware, Stingrays, or similar, I would focus on a few things in a letter to the selection committee (whether they asked for it or not):

* Record
* Past tournament performance (Semi-Finals & Finals, Championships)
* Head-to-head versus well known teams (especially THEIR "regular" participants)
* Team goals (to compete and beat the best in the Midwest, and why you are going to be successful do this)
* Players - THE reasons why college coaches will be excited to come to their tournament and stop to see YOUR team (PROSPECTS!!)

Bottom line - their goals are to make money (participation year over year), maintain a reputation as a premier tournament (Strong competition), draw college coaches (to see players/talent) .... and to more easily perpetuate this by inviting teams/org's that can offer these things now, and predictably going forward.

I emailed Al Land (of Compuware tourney) and let him know our desire to play in Compuware, and asked his suggestions on what we need to do to get in. He said the board would consider us, but they have a "strict criteria" in finding best teams for a quality tournament. OK? So I send our profile to help state our case to the Compuware Board.

Shame on us for thinking that back to back ASA State Championships; two
very respectable showings at ASA Nationals the past two years (25th at 14's in 07; 33rd at 16's in 08); 5th place finish in the NSA World Series; 16u Stingrays Champions; Over 180 wins the past two seasons against 18 losses; many, many tournament championships at 14,16, and 18u; defeated past two Compuware champs at our age group; Not to mention some of the top age group talent in the Midwest on the Nightmare team - great stuff for drawing college recruiters - and we already have a very large database of college coaches calling and emailing everyday to visit our fall showcase play; the list can go on. Again, defeated Michigan ASA State Champion Midwest Lakers twice this year (they were also NSA World Series Champions).

Now, as for single teams, 14u Slammers and 18u Wolfpack (to my knowledge, only 2 Wolfpack teams, one at Compuware, could be wrong) are not large organizations, but are in Compuware (and very deserving).

We did our job of promoting, Compuware made their choice, very unfortuate for the Nightmare. But we will still compete with another chip on our shoulder in 2009 :)

GCKA,

Wow! Sounds like are "on the MFer", and you even sent "the Wolf" ... (Pulp Fiction for anyone who didn't see it).

I am far from an expert, but I do know a little about your team, have seen them play a few times, seen who they have beaten. Great team.

If they had all that information, and turned you away, they must have one heckuva field.

Slammers & Wolfpack Black are unique exceptions, past history, and probably some connections, which preserves forward probably. Your team is in that category also, though, IMO.

The older Sapphires team (now 18u) had the same problem for a few years. They couldn't get in for the longest time, despite having very good teams, a few top prospects, and a well connected coach even. It was pointed out prior to last Year (their first invite) the accomplishments of the team including record, high finishes at Nationals, and wins over the Compuware finalists from the previous year, and finally got in (a resume that is not better than yours though). Not sure what to say, no doubt that your team is worthy ...

Well here is one for ALL of you! I've heard that the Wolfpack Black was turned down as well! Just a rumor have to have it confirmed by the coaching staff of that team. I have not spoken with Phil yet so. We will see!!! Maybe they just don't want to aloow Ohio teams in since the 18U age group is a National Qualifier this year!

When is the tournament to be played?

Throw all logic out the window when dealing with Michigan people.
I'm sure they thought they were making a wise move by not letting in
the Ohio Nightmare and the Wolfpack Black, you know, having an Ohio team make the Michigan
tournament more competitive is an "oxy moron" to say the least!

"What is the best way to have an in state team win?" "Only invite in state teams?"
I bet it took them 2 months to figure that one out!!! They put the "moron" in the term
and use it very loosely.

Jamie - I'm just curious - how on earth can they turn down the Wolfpack Black team if it's an ASA national qualifier?? National Qualifiers are supposed to be open to any team that registers. Seems a little "fishy" on the part of the Compuware tournament!!!

All I can say is, ... wow

Wolfpack, if true, that is news that defies all logic. The Nightmare situation is unfair, but somewhat "explainable" based on history. Thought I had this Compuware thing figured out .... makes absolutely NO SENSE, based on history! Showcase tournament?!?

Their selection process has always been puzzeling, yet alot of good teams still try and get in. I know of alot of very talented teams that did not get invited in years past, I really wonder if they do try and balance the number of teams from each state and as Pickledad said try and invite good teams from bigger organizations.

I doesn't really matter organizations or not, if you say you have the best tournament around, invite the best teams. I think in situations gone bad in softball, parents and coaches act more out of jealousy than common sense.
