Compuware - who's in and who isn't?

Jamie,

I agree, we were speaking of that same scenerio. I have had many DI coaches tell me that
Ohio is a "hotbed" the next couple years for softball, and not from just Ohio coaches.

The reason softball in Ohio has "raised" the bar is so many people who work hard and care about the game in the buckeye state. We have many teams in Ohio that push other programs to get to the top level, so if we are shut out of their tournaments, lets save the gas and keep the money, softball, and college coaches in Ohio!

I'm sure Warren will go for it!

No intent here to rip on Michigan softball, but Compuware’s actions may simply reflect an effort by Compuware to resuscitate Michigan softball. My daughter plays for a Michigan college and there are several very talented players from Michigan on her team, but there has been a shortage of Michigan teams playing ASA Gold and “A” level softball. I believe there were only 1 or 2 teams from Michigan at ASA “A” Nationals this past summer. I suspect that as a result fewer Michigan players have been getting recruited lately to play ball in college. My daughter’s college team had four freshmen recruits this year and NONE were from Michigan. I’ve been hearing for years that the Compuware Tournament is not what it used to be. The Canton, Michigan facility is a very nice venue for college coaches to see a number of good players: 16 fields with a restaurant/bar at one location, right off the highway, near a major airport, but there are more facilities like the Canton one today than there were when the Compuware Tournament began. Each year it seems that more and more teams from other states are choosing to go elsewhere. Last year at Compuware my daughter’s team made it to Sunday and I think all but 1 or 2 of the teams she played were from Ohio. Furthermore, the Michigan college that recruited my daughter did not see her at Compuware until AFTER she was offered her scholarship. The coach from the Michigan college had chosen NOT to go to Michigan’s biggest tournament that year! He recruited her after seeing her play at ASA Nationals. He was at Compuware to see her play the next two summers, but I don't think it represented any re-evaluation of the Compuware Tournament. At that point he had even come to one of her high school games!

As a pitcher, I was looking forward to compuware, then found out coach went another direction because the talent level was down, he said more B teams invited now.
Wolfpac and Nightmare are 2 scary teams to face, they are deep and adjust well. It's sad they were both left out by foolish people. I think Jamie has a wonderful idea, a boycott by ALL Ohio teams.

Valley Extreme 16U Blue is not in at Compuware either. We actually are awaiting the ASA dates which at one time had either the State or Region 9 Qualifer on the same date as Compuware. We have had a good 5 year run at Compuware, but we are more interested in playing in ASA National qualifing events as opposed to Compuware.

It will be very disappointing to me to come to find that ASA has not scheduled either of these events and we didn't even apply . WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO GET ASA INFO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil
The reason they don't want your Wolfpack team at Compuware is very simple. They are only interested in featuring their own team. My favorite memory of Compuware was when they scheduled their team against my 13U team (thought we would be a push over) we proceed to run rule them 8-0. Then we got a "HUMBLING" experience as we played your team next and it was another run rule game, but not in our favor.

I for one will miss the one to two weeks of coughing out dust. Having to beg to get a pitchers rubber area repaired. And some of the "great umpiring" and if you dont believe it just ask them.

As for the college coaches I again believe that the coaches will go where the best teams are. Over the last few years I think Compuware has not had the amount of coaches as I had seen a few years prior.

My thoughts

I believe these big name tournies are a dog and pony show. Saw gcka play at stingrays, great team, same with the wolfpack. i think politics is a major deciding factor on who get's in.

Compuware is an Invitational. Stingrays is an Invitational. I'm sure there are many criteria for choosing teams, and it's not necessarily related to a win-loss record. It's like complaining that your DD is the prettiest girl in her high school (and she just might be), so why wasn't she the prom queen?

One thing I've decided is that at least an invitational softball tournament's selection process makes more logical sense than the Electoral College!!

I do not disagree that the Nightmare and Wolfpack Black should be in Compuware. They are two of the best teams around, not sure what would keep them out. It almost seemed like it was first come first serve this year.

Compuware is very political and truly out to promote their house teams ...that have been getting weaker and weaker over the years...rule to self...don't beat Compuware badly and don't do it 4 0ut of 5 times you play them in a season...especially @ their own tourney,LOL, DD team did it in 2003.... never got invited back...even though they were NSA National Champs,LOL..the every changing rules are what I like....well " We only take one team from each organization @ each age group....one year Ohio ICE had 3 18u teams and yes they competed well, Pitts Spirit had 2 18u teams and on and on...Or we will only take the older of the age group teams....and are you 18u coaches aware that College player are not allowed to play @ Compuware so even thought they are still 18u eligible they can't play....Yep, stay in OHIO

call compuware what you loike, but it has best college scouting in this region
i don't think teams will cut their own nose off by joining boycott because a couple teams without organizations didn't get in
my DD played in a big organization and they were in every other year when they were the older team in that age group

glad, it's not teams without organizations not getting in, if that was true, many of these other teams would not be in. When you pass up top teams for mid-level teams, that's all needs to be said. I have it from a reliable source that they, meaning the Compuware board decided to look out for their own teams interests, and having teams come in and mercy them was not in their best interest. It will not be long before scouts recognize this and look elsewhere.

14U Tigerlillies won last year and have been accepted this year as a Young 16u team. Maybe if they do to well in 09 they won't be asked back in 2010 ?

For the past 5 years when a good team doesnt get in I hear from people how they are looking out for the own teams.

Shockwave seems to know what is going on. When the 2 Best teams at the 16U and
18U Level in the State of Ohio gets shutout of a Tournament, when the criteria is the Best teams make it. I agree with Shockwave and Compuware's motive? Stay away from the Nightmare and Wolfpack.

You don't have to be part of a big or name organization to have a good program. I will put our players up to any...they work hard, are focused, and are trained. How many college coaches do you see at the, for example, the Whitehall tournament (not a knock on Whitehall, a good tournament that doesn't claim to have all the exposure, and boast the top level of teams)? If you promote your tournament as that, then invite the top teams from years prior, and if you don't know who they are - ask.

Uber,
didn't quite understand the comment?

Besides the Stingrays tournament, is there another facility in Ohio large enough to showcase enough teams at the same time that coaches would be interested in watching? If you want to set up a tournament like Compuware here in Ohio, you are going to need a facility large enough (maybe with less dust and well maintained) to accommodate multiple teams playing at the same time.

Is there a place in Ohio like that? The only two places I can think of are OSU and Berliner. Maybe we already have the venues here in Ohio but need to rally together to make them better and more attractive to college coaches.

A combination of Field of Dreams in Boardman, and Candlelight Knolls in Cortland would work. They peripheral fields also that could be utilized.

GCKY, Every year its the same thing, good teams left out and they say the same thing year in and year out. Compuware is trying to set the tourney up so they can win it.

Occam's razor means -All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best.

And IMO that means, there is no real committee that throughly checks all the teams credentials. I think they want "x" number of teams from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana etc. I really think its random. I personally think they believe if your trying to get into Compuware your good. I highly doubt there is plot or plan to load the tourney up with patsies for Compuware teams to beat up on. They have let very good teams in the tourney in the past and I would bet there are alot of good teams in it this year.

Toledo could host something like that easily, there are plenty of nice fields here. It would take somebody like the SGS Magic to do it though, they bought temporary fencing for USSSA worlds and with Jim Hall running it, he has the knowledge and forsight to put something like that together.

Check out his College showcase for the Toledo tune-up and read the stuff he is offering college coaches, pretty impressive to me and my DD does not play in that organization.
