Both of my DD's broke their pinkie finger on their right hand with about a month left in the season last year. Cost my youngest the opportunity to play in the USSSA World Series in Branson, MO last year.

Thank the Lord that my daughter has only has minor injuries compared to the ones on this post, but any coach worth their salt will have their pitchers and corners wearing face mask. I mean come on; the protective gear is available why not use it?????

Oh, I know; there is no good reason. ( sorry for the sarcasm but one too many varsity pitchers taken off the field by helicopter in recent years. now it's mandatory if they play for me.)

It is good to see more and more coaches and parents using the mask too. That little girl's face thanks you!!!

My DD wears a Rip It mask no matter which position she plays since she wears glasses. No complaints from her, think it helps her confidence. I've older girls quit wearing them.

I have no problem with masks and pads, as long as they are vountary. If they must wear a mask they should also have to wear knee braces. Knee injuries happen more often than bad face injuries.

I agree to an extent that it should be voluntary... it is also voluntary to play on my team... with the amount of law suits that go on every day... why take the risk. It is for their protection, and punchout, you are very correct about the knee injuries... I think that it is to some degree happens more often. I also think it depends on the age as well. However, as long as people cheat and shave, and alter bats illegally, my infielders WILL wear mask. It is for their safety. I care for my girls as if they were my own.

Like I told my DD last year.. after she took one off the chin and one off the right cheek bone... $40 mask, or $400,000 facial reconstruction... Her mask that she used last year is too small this year, we changed over to a rip-it... she plays her first game on Feb 20 in Middletown,Oh... so far she like it.

bad knee injuries usually don't lead to major concussions, broken eye sockets, loss of vision or impaired speech...while knee injuries can result in reconstructive surgery, which type of surgery would you prefer: the one with the scope of the one that requires a plastic surgeon?

seems pretty simple to me.;&

Mine has had smacked and swollen fingers , broken wrist, ( from throwing in on the hands) worst was a cracked growth plate in the ankle from those Lovely tie downs that they used to have at a park in Cincy for NSA states.. took 2 years for that stupid thing to heal.

My daughter took a line drive to her face below her right eye towards the side of her face against Elyria in the state semi-finals. Luckily nothing was fractured and she came back the next inning to finish the game.

My (at the time) 10-yr old DD injured her (throwing hand thumb) diving for a ball during warm-ups before our first game at the Toledo Tune-up. Mom had stayed home because niece was graduating. She ended up playing SS most of the tournament, and pitched 3 games, including the final on Sunday evening. Hand was swollen, but she said she wanted to play. She could barely grip the ball and used her other four fingers to throw. Mom came up Sunday, and after the last game, she took her to Children's. Turned out she had fractured her thumb in two places. Dad kept icing it, and Mom decided to take her the Children's. Ended up with a hard cast for a couple weeks, and a brace for the remainder of the season, but only missed one tournament, and learned how to slap one-handed. She could hit for us with the hard cast on, and played once she got the brace on. Needless to say, I'm pretty proud of her toughness.

This amazes me when I think about it- my daughter played fastpitch for nine years, most of it at the catcher position, and the only injury that ever required a trip to the ER was when she was walking off the field, caught a cleat and tripped. She said she heard something "pop" when she did it and then couldn't put any weight on it. I was thinking the worst. Turned out to be a mild sprain and she was good to go in a week or two.

My daughter was pitching, runner on third base, ball gets past the catcher. Daughter goes to cover home, takes the throw tags out the batter. She screams out in pain. She took her glove off, the bone in her hand connected to the middle finger was jammed, spiral fracture. She wanted to go back in the game. She had to have a plate in her hand, ending her summer season two years ago. Came back following High School season, was worried that next play at home would be hard. She did not have a problem, I was shocked, I thought she would have a problem covering home.

Three years ago DD was playing in a league game where they mixed 14U and 16U. We were facing a 16U team with a hard throwing pitcher (but not very accurate).
My DD was the fourth and final batter this pitcher hit in just two innings with a lot of close calls.

When she was hit the first time the ball was high and tight DD moved to avoid the pitch and the ball struck the knob of the bat. The ball then came up under the face mask right on the lower jaw. (Quicker KO than Mike Tyson in his day but ruled a foul ball).
We got her up and she wanted to continue so, she stepped back in. The very next pitch got her in the lower back. She was not a happy camper but went down to first.
After the Umpire awarded her 1st he asked for the other team to remove the pitcher.
Later when we got home she had a golfball size knot on her jaw and a ear ache from wher her jaw came up.
Her bell was rung for a day or two but she bounced back.

You know, i just don't understand why the governing softball organizations do not make wearing masks for the younger age groups MANDATORY! I also cannot figure out why some PARENTS aren't smart enough to get a mask for their kids if they play up front either.

I've seen way too many injuries like this. The younger kids just don't have the quick reflexes to get out of the way of a hard hit liner.

Come on, people, smarten up!

I do hope your daughter gets well soon. Consider this a lesson learned and do the smart thing and buy her a mask.

I agree IvyMike. It should be mandatory. I dont care how good you think your daughter is. Why risk it? My 10 year old always wears one, pitching or not. From talking with people, some of them think their daughter is too talented to ever take one off the face. Geez..these are fractions of seconds we are talking about. It's just not worth it Imo

That would be enough to make you charge the mound:lmao::lmao:
