Dealing with parents who say they can't make practice at the last minute. How do you handle situations like this? I struggle and get frustrated with this. I put lots of time and effort to get a field lined up, work around schedule and then BAM. You get that text saying they can't make it they have plans. What should a coach do?
This should be part of your parents meeting right after tryouts as far as expectations and consequences.
As a coach regardless how good the player is if you allow the player or family to dictate commitment your team will suffer.
We had parents/players sign a commitment contract. Nothing legal or binding but it helps the players and parents understand that the level of commitment for this level of play requires dedication.
At 16U and above the field of players thins and most of the ladies and families still involved know what they need to do to be successful. Under 16 and those coming from a team that played more Recreational events need direction and guidance as they take the step up in play as long as you are consistent, state expectations and manage to those expectations you will be ok.
As far as consequences failure to make practices, games will cost the player playing time or at least starts.
