Does a HS Head Coach?

Look unqualified if he/she allows their other coaches to coach the bases while they keep score and coach from the dugout?

No. How many head football coaches have assistants that call the plays? Countless

Actually I'd like it I think as then maybe they could have some bench time talking situations or mistakes made with the ladies on the bench teaching as they do.

Who's running the team the Head coach or the Board/AD?

They are paying him or her to run the team, let them run it as they see fit. That could be good, bad or ugly, but it's still their team. Sort of like my Boss saying how I need to do my job... He tells me "I'll stay out of your sandbox, you stay out of mine"...

Board,AD,Principal, others who were not chosen for the coaching job and parents of players who give very little effort.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I like being on the bench with the girls sometimes.

Ridiculous. Anybody who demands the head coach be a base coach doesn't understand the game as it's played today.

IMO, most coaches overcoach during games and underteach during practices.

The better and smarter your team is, the less important the base coach becomes.

Look at Mike Candrea's old Olympic teams. What did he do from the third base box? Just tried to keep busy deciding who was going to pitch the next game, as his girls hit the snot out of the ball and ran themselves silly on the bases.

And most are teachers....lol

From a teacher's perspective, I get real tired of BS comments like this about coaches that happen to be teachers.

Maybe people like you don't realize that many coaches that are teachers went into the profession so they could coach. For many teachers, it was a lifelong dream to be a coach, so they went into the teaching profession so they could follow their dream.

I know it isn't always the case, but to lump so many great HS coaches into one general statement is a pretty screwed up thing to do.

And maybe, just maybe, you didn't mean to ruffle my feathers, but this isn't the first comment on this subject that rips on teachers that coach.

Some of the most inspirational people in my life were my teachers, and many of them were my coaches in HS too.

I'd just like to let people know my opinion. I know there are more out there that feel the same.

Hammers- You are dead-on correct. As a HS coach and travel coach (non-teacher), I have seen the good and bad at both levels. There are an incredible number of HS coaches who are teachers and coach for the right reasons. Just incredible people. Just because someone may know a bad teacher/coach, it is stupid to lump them together.

Sort of like calling all parents bad because they know someone who is a bad parent. Absolutely ridiculous.

I agree- back when I was young and in high school virtually all of our coaches were teachers- for the most part great people and good coaches. I think it was good to have that bond where you saw the coaches during throughout the school year. That being said, there were some coaches who were not teachers who were very good. It is nice to have a mix of both. It is terrible to paint either side with a broad brush because of a few bad experiences.

I'm new to the board but I took it as a positive. When my DD was looking for a team for this year 11U/12U I was open with all the coaches that we were looking for someone to TEACH her the game. I don't care how well a coach knows the rule book or plans game strategy. If he/she can't teach the girls to play, they aren't a coach.

the Thirdbase coach and firstbase coach have a important job directing traffic during the game. A head coach does not have to be on a base if his asst coaches have any skill with moving runners. Most schools do not have large staffing and will have their head coach in a base coaching position. Most head coaches like doing the walk to third base because they are so into the game they want to be on the field and make that play on the foul ball, I only had two E's all season :)

You are correct, and I am sorry for the general statment.

But I was watching a program on High School Texas Football. These coaches do one thing, coach Football. TEXAS is known for its outstanding football players. These coaches during the off season are working on new plays, plans, training etc., coaching football is their full time job and they get paid 6 figures to do just this, coach football. Colleges go to Texas for players. If the teams don't win, the coaches get FIRED. I wonder if the southern and western high schools have just coaches to coach fastpitch, and if this is one of the reasons these regions are so well known for this sport..

If a person has ONE JOB to do and ONLY one job. They will GENERALLY be better at it then someone who has mutiple jobs to worry about. Do COLLEGES have teachers as their HEAD COACHES, or are these coaches paid to do one thing all year long, that is coach....

Again, general does not mean all, it means %51 or more..

No problem. At least you had some reasoning behind your statements. I think weather has something to do with the success of California over Ohio in softball too.
