Honestly, i saw no problems with the umpiring that we had, I was impressed with the crew we had Saturday for the most part, knowledgeable and knew the game.

I agree Hitter, the 16's must have came out on the good end of the umpiring schedule.

Many schedulers put their top people at the upper age groups.

Just too bad there aren't enough to cover all the age groups.

I take exception to the last blog, about the "best" umpires doing baseball this past weekend in Goshen.

I am an umpire, only softball. I was not at Goshen, I was in Pickerington. But, as a genereal rule and based on my observations, the "best" baseball umpires don't know how to call or position for:
A stolen base from first to second,
an illegal pitch,
the difference between obstruction and interference in softball
and how to handle defensive conferences!

The "best" softball umpires are exactly that, real softball umpires.

AM I missing "The Last Blog"? Don't see what your talking about?

Down this way..... down South.... many umpires do HS softball and then do boys baseball in the summer as the money for two games is $140.00 versus what they can make at girls tournament games. Boys baseball upped their fees to get good umpires in this area.

Boys summer baseball has actualy taken some very good softball umpires away from the summer games and tournaments of the girls. I know in this area it has indeed.

The Cincy Doom Organization would like to thank all the teams that attended last weekend's tournament. This was the first time for us to run a tournamentment entirely on our own. We wanted to make it a good experience for all teams playing so they would return next year, hopefully we achieved that.

There have been alot of great comments about the field crew, and they deserve every bit of it. BTW those guy's are all volunteers for the Goshen Youth Sports Program. I also want to thank the many other teams Parents and coaches that jumped in to help get the fields ready on Sunday. There were many Hawk's and Static coaches lending a hand on the fields that I was working on that morning, and there were also many other coaches and parents from other teams helping out on the other fields also. When the rain hit Sunday morning I thought we were done for the day.

Again thanks for attending, and we will work hard at trying to improve next years tournament.

Friday Night Bingo ( to which the Goshen Youth Sports in funded by until recently... now ballfields rental for events helps of course ) had been good to them over the years. The community has supported them for years by attending Bingo. Teams that ever there on a Friday night stay are more than welcome to come to the Park and play Bingo.

They have been working up there, TT ..... all fall and spring. Making improvements, etc... Busy bunch of guys. They have been blessed to have a retired gentleman who goes up there every day and mows and does whatever just to keep busy. Great volunteers in the community helping out the Youth Sports people.

Ballfields, obviously, can take water and rain...... and with org people's help...."Let's play ball" was surely heard throughout the park. The Goshen people kind of pride themselves on that.. as a matter of fact. Ask one of them...LOL.. how many rec games was cancelled last year (7 I Believe ) at their park. Ask how many other communities came here to play their home games when their fields were too wet to play and Goshen never turns them down if a ballfield is available or even charge them one red cent and do the labor themselves.

With motel costs sky-rocketing ... teams can have the feeling of being giving a chance to play after adverse conditions and it is money well spent by the parents based on how weather is for any given weekend in any given year in Ohio during tournament season.

Motels of the County are trying to keep their costs down for the parents ..... a great Convention and Visitors Bureau to work with getting low motel prices... so it all helps and when it becomes possible to build the other eight to ten fields... Goshen will be a viable option by teams to play ......... even more.

I for one was amazed at how the Doom & Park folks pulled this tourney off with the typhoon that hit mid-morning. We sat around under shelter for a bit, networked with other coaches, went to grab a late breakfast at Frisch's on Rt 28 (that Breakfast Bar got CRUSHED with all the teams there - haha)... came back, and we were told we were playing in 1 hour. Amazing. I don't think many parks are up and running the same day after that shockwave of rain hit. AWESOME job by all parties involved in not only getting this event done, but getting it done very well. -Larry-

Doug:

I am WAY too late in posting our appreciation to the entire Doom organization and specifically the Cincy Doom 95 team for the fantastic job you did last weekend (that blankety blank day job keeps getting in the way).

One fact may appear in the 14U scores (which I haven't yet reviewed), but I think it deserves a very big kudo on this general thread regarding the tournament. Because of the rain delays, it became clear that the 14U bracket would not be able to play out completely before darkness. Doug and his team, prompted by a parent suggestion, withdrew from semi-final competition so that 14U bracket play would produce a champion without a coin toss or other nonsense. Let me phrase this differently: what was clearly the #1 team in the 14U tournament withdrew for the integrity of the tournament. No parents whining, rather one of them actually suggested this resolution. A teeny part of me is ticked that a team already having an overwhelming advantage (because of its quality) in recruiting gets another bump based on this decision (j/k :yahoo:) but 99.9% of me is in awe of the way that the Cincy Doom 14U team and the entire organization last weekend emphasized its commitment to Ohio fastpitch over its self-interest.

No one could ask for a finer representative of Ohio fastpitch.

Well said CGS. I too was impressed with that level of integrity, it is just another example of the fine people Doug Anderson the entire organization are.
