dumb rule question

My youngest dd (8 YO) is playing on a team that is playing a lot of NSA this year. Today her coach informed me that her glove is illegal. He got me a copy of the NSA rule book and on page 18 is the statement: Gloves that are entirely gray, white, or optic are illegal.

In that statement the word "entirely" is italicized and underlined. DD's glove is white with black lacing, and black and green (non optic) lettering. Does that really meet the definition of illegal?

She loves this glove and we really labored to get her one she liked. If it's illegal I am open to suggestions for dying it another color. Glove is Easton SY115FP. Here is a link to a picture of it: http://www.justballgloves.com/product.view.aspx?p=10305

Personally, at 8 I'm happy if they keep the glove on while they're in the field, and don't care what the color is. Purpose of the rule is to keep teams from deliberately attempting to use a glove that will match or come close to the color of the ball. Only time I've seen it called was on an 18U pitcher whose glove was similar in color to the ball (her uniform was also similar, but not apparently an issue).

At 8U, no one will enforce that. She will grow out of it before it will be an issue. I've only ever herad that enforced on a pitcher.

I would agree that "Gloves that are entirely gray, white, or optic are illegal." would mean the whole glove must be just that color and only that color..... on a side note why would white be an issue as the balls are optic yellow, old rule i guess that needs updated...

But if you have one of those 8yo. pitchers that is talked about on OFC and is already throwing 55 mph with a drop ball and a drop curve then it might be an issue

You forgot to add.....

If this is the case, Please forward pitcher's name to Todd Harbaugh, c/o Parma Wildcats, Parma, Ohio.

Is she playing 8u or playing on 10u? I would have a hard time believing any coach at the 8u (or ump) would say anything about the color of glove a player has.

I tossing around the idea of having my dd wear a all yellow glove with black laces when she pitches this year! :D

It's been a few years since I was registered with NSA, but if you're reading from page 18 you may be reading from the slow pitch section of the rule book.

The fastpitch rule section starts on page 82 and the definition of a legal glove is on page 102.

The fastpitch rule is similar, but not identical...

Rule 3-3: All fielders must wear gloves or mitts made of leather or other approved materials. Only the catcher and first baseman may wear mitts. The glove worn by a pitcher must be uniform in color and may not be white or grey. Gloves or mitts with white, grey or optic yellow circles on the outside, giving the appearance of a ball, may not be worn by any player and will be considered illegal.

Generally, most rule sets that specify a single color for a glove are referring to the body/shell of the glove and not the laces or manufacturer's logos. Prohibiting a white or grey glove- if an optic yellow ball is being used- suggests that this rule needs some updating.

The different glove rules for different sanctioning bodies can give folks a headache. Every single one has a different definition of what is legal or illegal. What's good to go in, say, a high school game might not be in an ASA, NSA or USSSA game.

I'd just make sure I had a back-up glove in the equipment bag...just in case...

She is 8, but playing up on a 9U team that is playing a 10U travel schedule. She is also a pitcher so it sounds like I have an issue with the glove after all.

This is definitely a rule that could use an update. I'm pretty sure brown or black gloves are legal in all sanctions. I know, I'm just a wet blanket adult with no sense of the importance of juvenile style.

I feel your pain Mad Hornet. My kid was hugely into pink at that age and it's barely abated still and she's 20 now. We were in Dick's down in Florida last month for spring break and she wanted a new glove. I think she tried on every glove there at least once, up to and including the tiny little pink gloves for 4 yr olds. (Awwww, it's so cute!!) 45 minutes and 4 "final decisions" later, she finally picked something. Lucky for me, she had to be at a team meeting or else we might still be there! Needless to say I have long since given up going clothes shopping with her. Funny how things seem in retrospect, what seemed like agony at the time I can smile about now. :)

What are your thoughts on getting it dyed? I think the appeal for her was more how light it is and how it feels moreso than the color?
