Local guy started a during the week summer league for local HS/travel/college teams. Not sanctioned by anyone that I'm aware of. I know 3 HS teams and a travel team got in.
I'm a HS assist --the league starts later this week , runs thru mid July I'd guess ? I know there is a ten day rule , a july 1-31 something , and who knows what else. I do not coach any travel. So what am I allowed to do , and not do ? thanks , a 1st year rookie , MD ( no joking at my coaching abilities , or lack there of )

You AND your fellow Portsmouth Notre Dame coaches cannot collectively have more than 10 contact days with the HS team. The 10 days include any practices. It sounds like you are OK in terms of the league's start and end dates. Now you just have to see whether your league schedule calls for more than 10 games. If it does, you should get someone not on the HS coaching staff to be the head coach or manager and you should only participate up to the ten day limit. And remember for each game and practice in which you and another HS coaching staff member participate, that counts as two contact days.

I've done this off the top of my head and I'm sure someone else will correct any errors. The one thing that I can't remember is how league double-headers are treated with respect to the 10 contact limit. I'm pretty sure that a double-header would only count as one contact. We never had to deal with that issue when DD was in HS because we coached the summer league team and we were not part of the HS coaching staff.

I had to look this up myself earlier since I usually coach in our local summer program (rec ? I know, don?t poke fun) but was offered the chance to assist with our school team as well
OHSAA the OHSAA General Sport Guidelines (http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/rglts/GenSportsReg11-12.pdf) and softball ?calendar? (OHSAA Girls Softball Information) have the following key points:

  • General Sports Reg 6.5.a ? No restriction on the number of athletes from the same school team on any interscholastic team until July 31. Normally this is set at half the fielded roster. Four for BB/SB.
  • General Sports Reg 6.9 ? Limited number of off season contacts. Max of 10 ?contacts? from June 1 ? July 31. The 10-day limitation applies to the entire coaching staff. Each individual coach is not entitled to 10 different days for coaching.
  • Absolutely no contact after August 6 ? Sept 3

So it sounds to me like you are fine as long as:

  • The league ends before August 1
  • You only plan to have a total of 10 games and/or practices
If still in doubt then I?d run it by your schools Athletic Director to be safe. It falls under his job description to know for sure (IMO).

If the team you are coaching has 4 or less players from your HS then the 10 contact days rule does not apply.
You can coach them as much as you want from June 1 to July 31.
Don't know if this would apply to your situation or not....

I read MD to say that this would be his HS team participating in the league so I assumed the team had more than four Portsmouth Notre Dame HS players.
