Two other Northmont softball girls, Jess Clutter and Kate Pfeffer, were also nominated for this, but the school only can recognize one female athlete. All the girl's coaches nominate someone from their team and all nominees get to attend. It is quite an honor to even get mentioned for this award, but to be the one that represents your school is very impressive IMO. Tennis player MaryAnne Bonnano was the representative from Northmont.

Not taking anything away from these girls, this is an amazing accomplishment. The ones mentioned above were the "Honorees" for the award, meaning they were one of 5 to 7 finalists for the school. The actual "Nominee" is the one school representative (a senior) who has the opportunity to be awarded the Rae Burrick scholarship. All the Honorees and the Nominee from each school are invited to attend the dinner and award ceremony. The coach of the Nominee is also invited to attend. It is a formal ceremony and a wonderful way for the girls to mingle with other top scholar-athletes from around the entire Miami Valley.

Thanks for the list, it shows all the Honorees as well as the Nominee from each school. Congratulations to all the girls. Well done.

Rae Burrick Update: and only because I feel this is so important to recognize the female scholar-athletes in our area.....from the DDN:

By Marc F. Pendleton, Staff Writer 11:39 PM Wednesday, May 18, 2011
KETTERING - Winning consecutive state tennis titles was tough enough. Being student council and class president was over the top. "Both are so tough," said Waynesville High School senior Alyssa Ritchie. "There's a little more pressure in tennis, maybe. But trying to do a lot of activities and please everyone is difficult, too."

It wasn't difficult in choosing Ritchie the 2011 Rae Burick Women in Sports Award winner Wednesday evening at a packed Trent Arena. The 24th annual event honored more than 330 senior girls from 48 area high schools. Ritchie succeeds 2010 winner Lisa Nouanesengsy of Wayne as the $1,000 college scholarship winner. Four other runners-up received $500 scholarships.

The event is a community service project of the Kiwanis Club of Dayton and The Children's Medical Center. Rae Burick was the wife of longtime former Dayton Daily News sports editor Si Burick. Athletics, academics, community service and a personal essay were evaluated. Richie shined in all areas: Two-time unbeaten (66-0) Division II state singles champion, class valedictorian (4.7 GPA), president of two major school groups and a volunteer for physically and mentally challenged adults. She also hopes to be a surgeon.

Ritchie will pursue her tennis career at either Cornell or North Carolina-Wilmington. She's nationally ranked for girls ages 18 and under. "Being recognized with all of these athletes, from all the sports and not just tennis, is really great," Ritchie said.
"This means a lot. It shows that hard work pays off."

The four runners-up were Marianne Bonanno (Northmont), Rebecca Esselstein (Alter), Kelsey Schlater (Versailles) and Erin Yenney (Troy). They too were No. 1 or near the top of their classes, excelled in multiple sports and were involved in numerous activities.

Congrats to Jess and Kate; and also Marianne. Did you attend the ceremony?

We went and it is a very nice ceremony and great tribute to so many young ladies that work so hard on the field and court, and in the classroom and community too. The winners were very impressive. What a great night for women's athletics in the Dayton area.

Was fortunate enough to catch the last 5 innings of the Wayne/Lebanon Sectional Finals last night and what a game! Both teams played solid defense and hit the ball well. A hard-fought match between two very good GWOC teams. Congrats to both. Goodluck to Wayne today VS Loveland.

Kind of an unfair advantage for Wayne to have to play back to back in tournament play. Hope Nicole Chesley is up to the task for Wayne.
I don't say this often, but go Warriors!
