Pitching and Pitchers Discussion How do you know when it is time to change pitching instructors?

I've been to both Hillhouse and Gillis for clinics. The information is almost identical, they both teach the way they pitch themselves and it's hard to argue with their resume's. I find Hillhouse much more personable and charismatic, he makes my daughter laugh and enjoy the practice. At a recent clinic I attended, Bill was very candid that he's never played baseball. Only played fastpitch. He has tried everything, every grip, every motion, everything. So it's not like he learned from a book or watching his daughter take lessons. Everything your daughter is doing, he's done himself. Everything she goes through, he's done himself. That speaks VOLUMES. There is no doubt it's hard to hear at first that things need to be done differently, but the results when you buy in are fantastic.

I have no problem traveling to Ohio for a clinic from either of the above mentioned instructors. is there updated info from these instructors in the clinic section in here at OFC?

We're always looking for good softball families. Once you get pass the state lines, we just might keep ya. :)

Don't think I haven't thought about it. The level of ball is a few notches up from what we see in NY. I look forward to traveling there very year to see how we match up. This will be our third year heading west. We have played in the Buckeye Showdown, Reach for the Starzz and this year we are looking into Dawg Daze.

Need a job for the wife and I if we were to head west permanently. Secondly, how are the Gun laws there in Ohio? :D

WNY, let me know when you have your schedule. I see we were both at the starzz tourney. It would be fun to meet you.

Back to the question. Over the last two years she has attended lots of different clinics and seen plenty of other instructors. In the process I have gathered a few names of different instructors that have come with high praise from other pitchers of all ages. I feel like I want to shop the market but does doing that hurt my daughters progress? Will different instructors that change her mechanics make it worse for my daughter? Naturally I want whats best for her, not me.

We switched pitching instructors almost 2 years ago. The previous instructor was good while we were with her, but it became clear DD wouldn't progress to the next level if we stayed with her.

DD struggled for a couple months after changing instructors as she mastered the new mechanics. It would be very difficult for your DD to progress if she keeps changing mechanics for different instructors.

You need to find a pitching instructor that you respect and trust. Our current instructor has a proven track record of developing pitchers that earn full D1 scholarships. Instructors at this level may not work with girls as young as your DD, but they should be able to recommend someone that would be a good intermediate step.

Good luck!

Sounds good. I think we are doing Dawg Daze from the sounds of it. I heard from a few other teams in our area that they are heading that way also. I really don't want to go to Ohio and loose to a WNY team (again, like we did last year). I would rather see a different team and take may chances..lol

Finding a quality pitching instructor can be difficult. You want to have a coach who can customize your daughters program based on her body type, work ethic and age. Programs should be discussed with pitcher and the person who spends the most time catching your daughter, ie. dad. The best instructors are the ones that have been there, done that. Changing coaches can be really awesome for your daughter. You can have several coaches with different ideas and grips as long as her basic mechanics stay intact. Your daughters coach should be on the same page as your daughter and be able to help motivate her to bring out her best potential. Send me a private message if you need info on some good coaches in your area.
