Could someone here at OFC clarify the rule about high school kids playing together over the winter.

What if they are Freshman and have never been a part of the high school team? Is the number 5 girls or as many as you need?

Can they play together until the team is picked or not at all?

If it is indoorball, there is no limitation for a high school or travel team. Right now, there is an indoor High School league at All-Star Sports in Columbus. The only limitation is on the High School coaching staff-they are not allowed to their high school indoor team.

Summer teams are a different story tho....you are date restricted if there are 4 or more from the same school and incoming freshman who have not yet played do not count I believe the date is June 1 to July 31 before and after is a no no.

I would still be carefull about the number of girls. You can have 4 from the same school playing outdoor ball August 1st till May 31st IF the HS coach or staff memeber isn't a coach. From Jun 1 - July 31st you can have a whole team together from the same school.

If a HS coach or assistant is coaching the team they cannot have anyone from their school on the team between August 1st- May 31st.

If it is during June and July they can't have more than 4 players from their school team together.

indoor ball isn't recognized as softball in Ohio for some reason. But you cannot meet with a HS coach during the offseason

I think the reference to 4 players in June and July is only if the High School coach or assistant is coaching. Non-high school coaches could be allowed to field a team of more than 4 high school players from the same school.

So you are playing indoors and the high school coach stands next to the teams bench for 2 games and talks to who ever is coaching the team between innings and also tells some of the players "MOVE UP IN THE BOX" is that allowed.

That coach is probably in violation of the rules. Does it happen? All the time. Does it bother me? It's kind of hard to get bent out of shape about a HS coach who is willing to spend time to come watch and support his or her girls. For those of you who have younger daughters, there is a possibility your HS coach will simply disregard the team during periods when the rules prohibit him or her from coaching. That's becoming more and more rare, but we've seen it more than once in the past several years.

Don't parents do the same thing?

I am curious as to how the rule works for the summer after a player graduates. Let's say there are five girls from the same high school on the team, but all five graduate before summer season begins. Can I assume that they are no longer considered in the high school team?

dont forget, the entire coaching staff can have (combined) 10 days of coaching with all the girls(more then 4) from the highschool team, between June 1st and July 31st, Also Championship play after July 31st is excused from the rule of ending July 31st

Championship play means... Nationals and the only nationals that goes beyond july 31st is ASA. I would findit hard to believe that a HS team coached by a HS coach can make it that far.

Yes parents do but we are talking about High School Coaches and rules.

And if this HS coach happens to have a girl on the team, then who is to say he isn't doing what all of the other parents do. That is the point I am making. Is it right? I am not in a position to make those determinations. Does OHSAA need to change this rule to give HS coaches more time to work with their team? Absolutely!!! But until then, there are the present rules to follow and I am just pointing out there is more that one way to interpret what they are seeing.

The OHSAA is not going to give the coach more time with their players, they are going to put even more restrictions on the HS coach. It's coming real soon. Also by rule, a HS coach can't coach their own daughter in the off season.

I have the document from OHSAA but do not know how to attach it here? If someone tells me how to attach it then I will put it here for all to see. It is 4 pages long.

I just read it and it says softball is restricted to 4 players but that from june 1 to july 31 (and longer if in a tournament continuation such as nationals) there is no restriction. so as i read it travel ball summer teams have no restrictions if not coached my high school coach in regards to number of players on team. great for softball summer travel teams who also want to help develop local high school
