Illegal Bat??

I've read that the cf5 bats without the new USSSA stamp will be illegal in September 2013. This is probably a stupid question, but....is this only applicable to USSSA tournaments? I.e. would the bat be fine for ASA, NSA, ASA/USA, and Ohio High School ball if it doesn't have the new stamp?

The USSSA stamp does apply only to their games. ASA, high school and others use their own bat standards and have their own stamps on the bat.

bretman,

I have a question regarding bats. I was at a game Friday night. It was about 35 degrees out and the other team was up there swinging a Louisville Slugger OneX. I am sure you know this bat has been recalled by the manufacturer (and I think the reason is because it had been snapping in half). What are your thoughts on this? Should the ump remove from game? Can umps really be expected to keep up with manufacturer recalls?

Utrip has moved the date required for their new stamp till sept 2014 for fastpitch, and yes it only applies to Utrip. ASA, NSA have their own standards and stamps.

Yes, it can be hard to keep up with all of the bat changes. Umpires are encouraged to print off the approved bat list and have it with them at games (high school/NFHS softball uses the ASA bat standards). The OneX now appears on the non-approved bat list, at the manufacturer's request.

Umpires should be proactive in staying on top of these changes. I know that the change was publicized on the ASA website. We also received an email from the state director of umpires that told of the change.

So, the obvious answer would be NO, this bat should not have been allowed in high school play. Hopefully it would have been caught in the pre-game equipment inspection. After that point, if a batter is using this bat in a game she would be subject to the penalty for using an illegal bat. In the case of high school play, the batter and head coach would be ejected.

When did they do this and can you supply a link to the notice??? All I have heard is bats are OK until 2013.

ASA and NFHS rules both specify not being on ASA's non-approved bat list, which caused some confusion and a delay in the OneX becoming illegal. The manufacturer initially requested the bat be removed from approved lists and ASA did just that - it didn't become illegal until ASA added it to the non-approved list 11+ days later, probably on March 4.

"USSSA has extended the grandfather period for using old mark(“USSSA 1.20 BPF”) from January 1, 2013 to January 1, 2014."

That says Jan 1 2014, but I have been told on a number of forums it was extended to 9/1/2014. I'll see if I cna find an adendum, but maybe it's just till 1/1/2014.
