Train isn't even on here and still gets some of the best topcs going.

anyone looking at the slammers would have to say they practice more and longer than anyone and we all know what practice makes.

$$$$$ - costs a lot to practice, train and travel this much. Before you sign up to ride the train, check to make sure that you can afford the ticket.

Don't worry Beck they won't play many, if any 14u

I hope we never play them so I can say we would have beat them if we played them:lmao:

Here is a score for you to chew on for
a while. Lasers win the last one without even playing a game. Lady Lasers 3 ohio slammers 2. Good luck to all and see you on the field.

Plumber27 - is my interpretation correct in that you are saying 3 Slammers left the team and are now Lasers?

The Lasers Red CF is a great pick up for the Slammers. We played them (red) at the Toledo Tune up. She snagged a shot to left center that I did not think Grady Sizemore could get to... she did

That particular player (CF from Lasers Red) is also an excellent slapper. I can tell you that when Bill gets done with her she will be on an entirely different level. The other players I cannot really comment on since I am not sure exactly which pithcer they are talking about. I know that we faced all of them this year and only one really stood out, so I will assume that she is the one being referred to.

In any case I'm sure that Bill will have them ready to compete at next years ASA nationals against the best in the country. Personally I cannot wait to scrimmage them again because they are definately the best in this part of the country.

anxious to see with 15 players on the roster and all these superstars who gets disgruntled about playing time.

will any of the new players take a starting spot away from someone who has been on the team and practiced five and six days a week for the last two years?

I'm guessing coach bigtrain would state his plan clearly to all players and parents. He spelled it out on the huddle. After testing the ASA waters, he could see he needs a larger and faster roster. He has specific reasons for this based on the performance of the warmer-weather teams - what kinds of attributes beat his team. As with everything else he does with the Slammers, it's not for everyone, but if you join I don't think he keeps such things a secret.

I don't think it's so much that bigtrain is lucky, he's smart. He knows what he wants to accomplish & how to go about doing that. My dd subbed one weekend when they were playing up in 14U & she learned an enormous amount in that one weekend. Good luck to the Slammers!

Unless arithmetic has changed, or the Slammers added some girls other than the 3 mentioned on this thread, it sounds like their roster size stayed the same. (lost 3, added 3)

Perhaps already disgruntled? writing on the wall? not willing to shell out the $$$ to ride the pine? Only those families know why but, whatever the reason, it sounds like they lost as many as they added...

Sounds like they added some talented girls but I don't think you can really say if this will make them better, especially not knowing who they lost. From what I've seen, and read on here, they had a talented bunch and anyone from that team will help make another team better. And who knows how the changes might affect team chemistry....

It will be interesting to follow and see how they all do... good luck to all of the girls.

If the Slammers and Lasers Red come to Colorado next summer, I will be anxious to watch each of them. It will be interesting to see how much better the top teams in Ohio are at 14-U than they were maybe five years ago, and it will be nice to say hello to friends.

The whole thing about roster size is something I am convinced Ohio needs to get over. It's just accepted out here that there are going to be 13-18 girls on a roster. The teams at 16-U and older are playing much less to win tournaments as opposed to showcasing girls.

Joe,

Your opinions are always valued, even more interesting now that you are wearing a college coach's hat.

Having been on several teams in the past, I guess it is about team goals, and a clear understanding that everyone must "buy" in to if they are to be part of a unique team.

It takes more than 11 girls to be competitive (thru to late Sunday) in tough top level tournaments, however, more than 11 girls can be pure "hades" with player satisfaction, parent relationships, etc.

I guess a "club" team that states its goals are winning come hades or high water, ... "buyer beware" ... you are ALWAYS at risk of becoming obsolete in a corner of the dugout on a talentd roster of 12-14 players. Year to year, ... or game to game.

On a showcase team though, how can you be happy on a team when your goal is to be showcased, but you are NOT on the field ... hung up in a numbers game among many equally talented deserving individuals?? Would seem a "showcase" team would have a smaller roster of very talented and HIGHLY COMMITTED players, so that roster size can be smaller (given the habits and unpredictability of teenagers)?

Thoughts?

Recruiting Help? - Also, when you are scouting what are you looking for in a nutshell? What catches your eye, where do you go from there as a "process"? Advice to a kid flying under teh radar on how to draw (positive) attention from you???

But this is how they do it on the west coast (and Gold teams - don't they carry more players?). It would be great to have someone share their experience with a team that competes like that. We need guest "speakers" from the west and the south.

"The teams at 16-U and older are playing much less to win tournaments as opposed to showcasing girls."

Joe, you really nailed that one! In Ohio, as you progress through the age groups, you see distinct changes - both in players AND parents.

10u - 12u = Parents more preoccupied with winning than the kids. Too many coaches and parents are focused on winning games and tournaments simply for bragging rights. Just go listen to the parents at a "mid level" tournament - you'll see my point.

14u = A lot of kids are hitting high school, and decide that softball isn't their thing. This weeding out has the potential to create much more competitive teams. What kills this potential is parents having "playing time" issues with their kid. A few parents start to "figure it out" and drift to the top tier teams, leaving even less talent on the "equal playing time" teams.

16u & up = Obvious split between showcase teams and the rest. Like a college game, you rarely hear groups of parents chiding umpires, coaches, etc. They generally let the players play, and the parents just come to watch. They are just glad their daughter was good enough to MAKE this team! Playing time is rarely an issue on the showcase teams, because the paradigm is entirely different. Each individual has prepared themselves, and THEN they come together as a team - the "winning" is just a byproduct of that preparation.

When parents step back and look at the forest, a LOT of things become less stressful. Unfortunately, we have a LONG way to go in Ohio.

Sammy,

Great comments, can ss all this occurring ... still at the transition fulcrum at this point (14u). It's like do a flyover for a good view & understanding of the forest, feeling pretty good about it all, and then be dropped in and realizing that there is wildlife here, lol, not as pretty and clear cut as it looked logically from a distance. It's all good though, it really is. Biggest part to me is having an internal mission & brand which is "communicable".
