DD loves playing fastpitch, has played for five years in tournament ball. At the beginning of school season I was worried how bad it would be, worse than expected as a couple of regular ofcers could attest to. How badly does it affect a girls chances with college if she don't play High School? Our starting catcher and center fielder quit before the first game and now with it being this bad a lot of the girls are talking about not playing next year. Thoughts anyone.

Before you make any decisions, make sure you read the "My DD Last Game" thread. No matter the decision it will all be over in 8 yrs at most and quite possibly 4(now 3). Don't let someone else dictate for your DD( including parents)

Who knows what will happen in the next year? Maybe the coach will move on or be asked to if the word gets out that enough people are unhappy. While it's not "required" to play HS ball and no doubt some college coaches won't care, others might, and it's a difficult story for the potential player to spin. Coach Tony wrote a great post in an earlier thread on this about recording what you would say if the coach asked, then playing it back and honestly trying to not hold it against the person. Anyhow, hang in there for the rest of this season and look forward to summer ball!

DD's played for a terrible coach during their high school career... But you make best of worst situation, become an example and show others what a great game this is. College coach really doesn't care but they will ask for stats for their Bio.

If she decides to quit school ball, make sure she becomes equally as active in another extracurricular, such as track, student government, volunteering, etc. Not only will it take her mind off whats going on with the team without her, it will show any potential college coach that she chose to do something relevant with her time.

Look at it this way; When your potential college coach asks you why you didn't play high school ball, there is no answer you can give that doesn't run up the red flag.

- Coach doesn't know anything
- They wouldn't let me play LF.
- Our conference s*cks.
- Coach plays favorites.
- I wanted to run track.

Colleges want players who can persevere/adapt...

I take it as live practices. I do not care for school ball that much either but if the girls love ball it is great discipline action on their part and ours, ( parents), to play. They go through the ups and downs of life in certain situations. I have told my daughters to just go have fun and be leaders no matter what happens. It can be very frustrating at times but remember it is 4 years that you do not get back. Have her set her own goals a side from the team goals and at the end of the year go over them goals with her and see how she did. If she reached all her goals then she needs to set the bar higher the following year. It is a game within a game she will be playing with herself. Like the post above, if she decides not to play she must join another activity as well as practice on her own everyday to keep the game she loves sharp for travel ball. As they get older they will wish they stuck with school ball.

I think that she should play high school ball. Louuuuuu is right in that there will be a red flag, no question. On top of that there is no other alternative at this time-inthis area to high school ball that involves softball. Sure she could run track or play ******** but those will only marginal choices. She will learn a lot even on a poor team about resiliency, commitment, work ethic and being a good teammate. She could still see her private instructors and keep improving.

When she gets to college and gets a fine coach of her choosing, playing on a fine team, she will certainly appreciate her situation. My dd played high school ball and didn't invite her high school coach to her signing. She eventually pitched every inning of every game in her senior year and did not receive a single accolade, but she didn't expect any. She used his lack of support to motivate her, she used the team experience that she had in high school to help resolve and head off issues on her college team, she has become a leader on in college mainly through hard lessons learned in high school. She has taken that experience and built on it making All-Confernece her sophomore year.

Negative lessons are as important and maybe more important (and what you do with them) in your dd's life. Play high school ball, s--k it up.

She should play and fight through it. With the right support, she could become a valuable leader and have extremely strong character/leadership traits (maybe I should take my own advice ). The road won't be easy.

As mentioned colleges won't care care; but they'll quickly realize the leadership abilities your dd has picked up from her adversity, could make her a valuable asset for their team.

The only issue I have is pay to play. Our school is 500.00. Now I have to make a decision between school and travel. Can't afford both. I have to choose travel ball. I don't even know the coaching staff at our school. I don't know if their good or bad (DD is 13) Just based on the size of our school, I have to believe she gets more looks in TB. You think that will be held against her....... economics.

Economics in a pay to play situation is one possible good reason ...

Are you sure our DD's don't go to the same school. We are having the same dilemma over here. DD is the only freshman on the team and she has regressed this school season. I feel that it would benefit her more to do private instruction with hitting & pitching coaches along with reps at home. Playing & practicing 6 days a week doesn't allow much time to work on her game when you factor in homework. This has been an aweful experience.

It's funny how much just being competitive in a couple of games can do. The night of the original post DD had a rough game against Brecksville, last night pitched against a strong Westlake team lost 7-0. Tonight they played Amherst and lost again 7-5 but it's nice to see her smiling about the games again, she played Center Field tonight but hit the ball well and just had fun. That's all she can do for this season, hope they pick up a win or two to finish, and then to the Madness of summer with her diehard softball friends.

Our school is $495. Most schools that are pay to play do fundraisers. We had a girl a couple of years ago cover her entire fee with fundraisers. Last summer I had a mom tell me she cut out her morning latte and put that money in a jar to pay for her girl's pay to play fee. Some way....some how....it can be done.
