Paid Coaches Good Or Bad

What do you think about teams that pay their coaches, and coaches that coach only because they get paid. Does the 2 or 3 thousand Dollars they get paid really worth it. Is it worth paying the extra cost in players fee to have a paid coach. (PAID COACHES ARE NOW PROFFESIONAL COACHES) Or is this just an EGO thing ie. team , players and coaches to say they have or are paid coaches.

I don't think that there is any blanket answer for this one. Its impossible to know what is really in any persons heart or mind so the answers would only be opinions.

Personally I see nothing wrong with it. Coaches (especially non parent coaches like myself) incure all the same expenses that the players families do. I know of some teams that cover those expenses for the non parent coach and that seems completly reasonable. Beyond that I guess each team (or family) would have to determine if the additional cost is worth it. Of course the vast majority of teams do not do this and it is not even an issue. The few that do are typically teams on a mission and it seems to work well for them.

Personally in my case we (my asst coach and myself) do not make a dime doing what we do during the summer. The thought never even crossed my mind to ask the team to do that. I know why we do it and I think that the team does too. We made a commitment to them and we will see it through.

Travel expenses are not considered pay. That falls under travel expense or a per diem rate. Pay is cash that the coach can spend or buy or use any way they want to

Whatever works. Some are willing to pay a non parent coach to assure themselves they won't have to deal with daddy ball. I have seen great paid coaches and great coaches who donate their time. As long as the girls are learning and having fun, that's all that matters.

Could someone please define what "Daddy ball" means in the context to which I frequently see it used here??

Is this a blanket statement (stereotype) meant as derogatory to anyone who happens to coach with a kid on their team, or is this reserved for the obvious father who widdles his way in so that his below average offspring gets all the prime playing time while not being the least bit worthy??

And Klump..... "Daddy ball?" - Aren't you female?? :p

"Daddy Ball" when a parent male/female coaches a team because as you say "below average offspring" and or think that the coach before them was just out to ruin there DD as a player;& It is not meant just for anyone that may coach a team and have a DD on that team, as long as they treat all alike.

Example: Coaches DD hasn't caught a ball in 2 years but is playing 1st base every game= Daddy Ball

Coaches DD is batting .100 after 20 games with 20 strike outs, you got it number 1 in the line up=Daddy Ball

Klump=female!

I don't see any problem with paid coaches, we pay to go to clinics. If your team can afford it why not "go professional", and if you can find that caliber of a coach for free GREAT. I guess it just depends on what your DD's long term goals are. So I guess I'll not vote, don't like any of my choices.

ya can't judge whether any price is worth it unless ya know what ya got for what ya paid -- if ya have a good one, it's well worth
if ya have a bad one, $10 is way too much to pay

Thanks for the clarification. :D I figured as such, but when it comes to the internet, it's best to not assume anything. ;&

Daddy ball, and it's next of kin...Mommy ball. Seen it all before.

I know the top teams out west pay, or at least the ones I've talked to. And I don't just mean California, either.

Heres my 2 cents. There is no right or wrong answer to the question for everyone. It is up to an organization, a team, a family, and an individual. Does having a paid coach ensure a great season, and a solid coach that will be everything you expect? Nope. Have people been burned by "pro" coaches and daddy ball alike? Sure. There are plenty of great coaches out there that don't take compensation for what they do. My personal opinion is that some paid coaches, and or teams that are out to make a profit are tarnishing what this is supposed to be about, and that of course is the girls.

I can't take the poll ... don't like any of the choices. While generally speaking I don't think most coaches should be paid, there could be situations where it would make sense. But I can't pick either of the choices that they're always better coaches or worth every dime. I used to be a parent coach, but now I am coaching for the love of the game and to bond with my daughter who is coaching with me. Don't think I could ever take money for doing it though ...

How is paying a coach about making a profit? Don't get that. I see nothing wrong with paying a coach. Before softball my DD played s@ccer with the Classic Hammers in Cincy. Her coach was a young guy with no kids, who was paid for his time. Don't see how that made him "not about the girls" or had anything to do with profits.

Up to the team and the parents. If paying the coach works and gets you what you want, go for it. Don't see how that would "soil" the game. A coach who doesn't have a girl on the team should be paid.

I think that is so great coaching WITH your daughter. I love that commitment. That has to be the greatest feeling for a father or mother who coaches. My hat is off to you sir. What a great thing that is indeed.

IMO, if an organization feels a coach is worth "pay" and the oach is a benefit to the players then its OK. However, if a coach takes it upon himself to be paid----- its way wrong!
