Are you paying the travel expenses for all coaches or just the head coach?

We give the non-parent Head coaches $100/tournament as a stipen for expenses, what they do with that is up to them. That amount gets reviewed every couple years to ensure that it is sufficient. It is actually under review this year as it has not changed in three years.

I don't feel that it matters whether an organization pays its coaches or not, there are good coaches out there that are paid and others that just do it for the love of the game.

I feel it boils down to why the coach is coaching, for the $$ or for the kids. My organization addresses it by ensuring it doesn't cost a coach anything to coach, we cover their expenses. If you want to make money coaching, you should look for a position elsewhere.

Perfectly stated Doug

I've not commented on this thread so I could just set back and watch. Doug you have stated exactly how I feel. I do not coach for the $$, but I do coach for the kids and my love of the game. I am very greatful as a non-parent coach that my hotels are covered. It makes it to where I can justify my coaching to my husband. I buy my own equipment, I purchase my own meals, pay the gas in my car to drive to practices and tournaments, and I spend countless hours entering stats, pouring over data, and justify a budget for my team. Why, because I love this game!

Feisty:

Don't forget the costs of attending coaching clinics.

Buckeye Heat has the same practice as Madness. Our hotel room is paid for but Ted and I absorb the rest of the expenses. It adds up quickly. We usually have Casey the Wonder Dog with us and we are perfectly happy to stay at Red Roof Inns. Even if she is not with us we are mindful of keeping the expense down, although we do stay at the nicer tournament hotels if they are offering a good rate; nationals have enough down time that it really does make a difference to have a nicer room in which to chill out.

I am in the "pay the coaches" camp after seeing Archbold in action. They have college players they pay to come back and the success rate is incredible. Couple that with the uneven distribution of coaching talent in volunteers, and it makes a lot of sense to me to bring in some "pro's." Now the caveat is this is for thier rec and "house" travel teams, but I believe the same would apply to regular travel organizations as well....Biggest issue I have seen in 6 years of travel is "daddy" mindset, seems most other team problems flow from that. Of course, after having my brains beaten in by Doom, Lasers, et al with thier upaid caoches, I am open to the concept...

In general, I'm not a big fan of the idea of paid youth sports coaches. However, that is an entirely different animal than paying for a coach's accommodations, mileage and possible per diem for food while at out-of-town tournaments.

It shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg for the privilege of volunteering your time, lol.

I'm all for making it as financially painless as possible to coach the girls. It would be a shame if good folks were unable to get involved, solely due to the financial burden imposed.

There's no way to adequately compensate a good, conscientious coach for the intangibles...like feisty said, hours of time on the computer and phone at home, and everything else a coach does outside of being on the diamond. It shouldn't cost more to coach than it does to be a parent of a player.

Also wanted to add a little more re: the post LCTigerdad made above...I just pm'd him with this note:

"I love the idea of paying the college players...for several reasons:

1. they are an awesome resource---up on newest, latest techniques/drillz/skillz

2. They connect so well with the girls

3. They can use the cash, lol...and it might help lure them into a regular coaching gig."

What do you think about teams that pay their coaches, and coaches that coach only because they get paid. Does the 2 or 3 thousand Dollars they get paid really worth it. Is it worth paying the extra cost in players fee to have a paid coach. (PAID COACHES ARE NOW PROFFESIONAL COACHES) Or is this just an EGO thing ie. team , players and coaches to say they have or are paid coaches.

Well, if a Coach is truly worth paying, then $2-3,000 is nothing. A paid coach should be able to make $5-15k minimum if they are truly bringing great information and instruction to their kids. I know families paying $50.00 a pop for hitting and some go weekly while other go bi-weekly. That alone is $1100 per month for Offensive Skills Development and it can all be done within the team forum and timelines instead of kids/families driving 11 different ways to learn how to hit and we know that only 4-5 really put that kind of time in anyways. So it's great for the coach that kids can't say, they have a hitting instructer(Their Dad) and really not put the time and money in on learning how to hit.

Anyone with some true coaching ability and credible character should be able to sell this easy to the small minority of families that truly want high level training.
