I'm curious as to how Alliance is in the Youngstown area? If you're willing to make the 45 minute drive to Alliance, why not go an extra 10 minutes to the Akron Area. Lots of GREAT pitching coaches. I would recommend Carla Brookbank. cbrookbank@neo.rr.com I would stack her up against anybody out there. JMHO

My dd goes to Jess Lamport. Her dad is the coach of the Poland High School team. She had done wonders for my dd. Made her the pitcher she is today.

Ed Beavears is VERY GOOD! He cares about the girls . If you give 100% he will give 100%. He cares how your DD arm feels after every lesson. And if he thinks you are waisting your money he will tell you. a lot of coaches are taking big group lessons and just pocketing cash, it is so nice to pay the same fee for a private lesson that some coaches charge for groups. And your DD will be coached on every pitch a solid 1 hour of coaching. My 15 year old DD been there 5 weeks and I cant beleive the differnce NO SORENESS ,MORE SPEED,MORE MOVEMENT AND CONFIDENCE. NICE TO SEE THE OLD SCHOOL WORK ETHIC.

Here is the thing with Hillhouse's style of pitching you will never have any soreness if done correctly. There is no need to ask if her arm or shoulder are ok.

Im not bashing any pitching coach on what they believe. What Im saying is Ive seen pitching coaches take money and not really care about the girls. Ed Beavers PREACHES PROPOER MECHANICS FOR THE SAFETY OF THE GIRL. Ive heard alot of good things about Bill Hillhouse. If anybody is not comfortable with how there DD is coached then its time to make a change. From what Ive heard Bill Hillhouse is very respected along with Ed Beavers.

I know Ed Beavers style of pitching doesnt cause sorness. No stress on the elbow or shoulder. Like jdcii said "if done correctly". I think with Bills and Eds style if done correctly both do not cause sorness or pain. Thats why mechanics are stressed...along with practice. Cant expect to pitch once a week and stay sharp.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, you have to pitch more than once a week, which we do. It would be nice to get one on one at least once a week. I have heard of bill, and he has a great reputation as a pitching coach. If anyone has his contact info, can you please forward. If Ed Beavers were still taking young ones, that would be perfect, but he is not.

Not only that, but unless you are "slamming the door" at release, men's and women's mechanics aren't any different.

Love, love, love Bill.

The reason, in my opinion, that some people get all wound up about Bill is because he isn't teaching the standard locked arm, barely open, slam the hips way of pitching that is so prevalent here in Ohio. If you look at pitchers from out West, not a whole lot of them pitch that way. He also challenges you to ask "why".

Again, just my opinion.

This is exactly right and why ohio never has had any really great pitchers make it to that next level of greatness. The best we had in a long time Tess Sito, is now known for her hitting and not even pitching anymore in college (injury to arm)

Are you sure about that???? Didn't Amy kyler and Carla Brookbank pitch for the Akron Racers?.... It that a level of greatness?...I think Katie Chain still holds pitching records at OSU? I think Ohio has put out a lot of great pitchers.

yes i would agree they were great, but out of the thousands to come out of ohio i would say 3 is not a number to talk about.

Even Kent State Football had 3 go to the pros and become big time players - James Harrison, Josh Cribbs, and Jack Lambert.. But i dont think anyone thinks that makes them a well known or big time D1 College football program...

And just maybe all 3 of those pitchers went to Bill Hillhouse....LOL:yahoo:

I'm sure all 3 of them didn't go to bill. There are thousands of pitchers that come out of every state, just how many make it to the greatness that you expect....prob not many. How many Bill Hillhouse pitchers have made it to the big time? No slam on Bill, just would like to know if you know of any.

no he does not tell who he has had, as he put it "if you are a pitching instructor and have a very full schedule of students your bound to have some that become great after awhile, do to their ability and not because you were their instructor"

Lets just face it Ohio is not known to be a power house in the softball world, BUT we are all trying to change that..

There is one thing I think needs mentioned. A 9 year old girl starting out needs time. From my own experience it takes 1 year just to learn how to snap the ball. The second year to put it tigother with the wind up. On the third year being able to pitch a game. This was told to me 5 years ago when my DD,S starting pitching and I did not beleive it. IT IS THE TRUTH DO NOT RUSH IT SHE WILL BE FINE. DO DRILLS AND MORE DRILLS GET THAT ARM IN THE PROPER POSITION DONT WORRY ABOUT SPEED FOR NOW.

I really couldn't disagree more with this. If that's all the girl is doing for 2 years, she's going to lose interest in a hurry. And that's setting aside the fact that if the arm stays relaxed, the "snap" comes naturally. It's not something that needs "learned".

I'm not trying to be argumentative. I just think we should avoid putting out opinions as fact.

Agree, crystlemc ... while agree with concrete that mechanics are critical, there's no way a girl is not going to want to pitch until a 3rd year ... you'll be lucky to hold them off until a 3rd month. Also, not sure what the current philosophies out there are, but when my daughter learned, she was told to throw hard from the beginning, working in the mechanics of course ... with less emphasis on control. Interestingly, the very first game she pitched, she walked in 7 runs before getting an out, but coach (dad) left her in there to work through it and we won 24-7! ;)

Of course she is doing more than snaps. After being around pitching and pitching instructors for 5 years I understand the hard work it takes to become a pitcher. A 9 year old girl starting out needs to have a good arm circle and proper mechanics learned now. This is the reason I know of 2 High School pitchers with serious arm injuries. I know of girls that there arm hurts all the time. This would not happen if they were not rushed into backing up and throw as hard as you can mentality. Thyank God My DD,s arm is fine .I guess thats because we did snaps and arm circle drills in basement when she was 10 for 6 months before we backed up. AND THIS GIRL CAN THROW.

If your mechanics are sound, throwing hard isn't going to cause injury. Throwing hard properly isn't about muscles so much as it is the whip you get from your arm.

Coachjwb, our dd is/has been taught to throw hard from the beginning. We are of the belief that if you focus on accuracy first, you become hesitant to sacrifice it temporarily to pick up speed, but if you throw hard from the get go, the accuracy comes. Not saying it's for everybody, but it's worked for our dd.
