I think that is a tough question to answer. My DD is not in High school yet, but I umpire varsity softball games and I see seniors sitting the bunch and I have often wondered they have a lot going on in their lives right now why would they want to spend so much time at practices and not play. If your an underclassmen there is always next year and you could work harder play travel and get better. As a senior I certainly would not say quit, but I could see them considering it. With that being said you do have a commitment to something bigger then you and that's the team. That is what I would tell my DD.

How about the opposite, you see hard work, committment and talanted kids who play and start on travelball take a back seat to coaches relatives, friends and squeeky wheels.

It's tough to watch your DD sit the bench as a Freshman, behind a Senior, when she is just as talented as the Senoir. Been there, done that!! After having it out with the coach about moving her to JV to get some innings, (to no avail), had to just sit and bite my tongue because I knew she would start the next three years, if she continued to apply herself to her craft. She stuck it out, I shut my mouth, and she is a second year starter, with one more to go.

Yeah I feel your pain, watching any player with less qualifications play ahead of your dd is rough.

The only time quitting is an option is if your kid is in danger if she continues. It sucks watching your kid sit or not being utilized in a position where she could contribute greatly to the team, but it happens. I think it goes back to the quality vs. quantity, at least in our situation. I'd rather see my girl pitch toe to toe with a previous state champion into extra innings & then have to sit the next one or two out while the other pitcher plays than throw every inning of every JV game. Being fed up & thinking about walking away doesn't mean someone's a quitter, it means their human.

If a freshman is just as good as a senior, the senior should get the start all of the time. The freshman going for the seniors job must beat out the senior not be just as good. The senior has a previous 3 years of HS commitment. Now, saying that, if the freshman beats the senior out of her job, then so be it, the freshman starts.

I don't think quitting is an option, Life is the same way. We don't always get credit for our hard work but we can't just quit because its not fair.

I agree with r-anslow about point number 1. If the senior and freshman are equal, the senior should play.
If the freshman isn't playing they should play reserve and not sit on the varsity bench. The only thing you learn as a freshman sitting on the bench is that there is a track team.
If your a senior on the bench the coach should have told you your situation before the season started and you should have made your choice to play or not to play then. If the coacj led you astray you have every right to quit.

If it is even going through a players head, rather than be a disgruntled cancer to the team now would be ok:(

Good points R an slow, but that means the coach is a logical person. To all great freshman, I believe they should be playing varsity ahead of any one who is less talanted, this is not the case. Next question, can a coach keep a player on varsity if they ask to be sent down to JV? or can the A.D. over ride the coach?

If players want to play HS Ball they must play when and where the coaches tell them to play.......everyone has an opinion of who should be ahead of who on the HS teams but at the end of the day it all falls on the head Varsity Coach. We only have one freshman who made varsity and it could have been argued there were better freshman that should have made it but from what I have seen those that didn't make it to Varsity can sleep in their own skin and seem very happy playing together...oh...and they are very good!
From what I hear the lone freshman seems to be working out! We tend to take the attitude that any game time is good time and remember the kids have zero to do with who gets put on what team in high school ball.

Head coach is the boss, we have 4 freshman starting, (one is by far a great player) two sophmores that hadn't picked up a glove in high school ball and it shows. Our case is, it not what you do, it's what your name is.
can't wait till travel ball!

itsme, to answer your question, yes the coach can keep a player on varsity even if she wants to play on JV. I have this situation right now but we are not making her stay varsity all of the time. We have several players that go with Varsity for situational use only. They also play JV when the games allow. It is understood on our team that only 9 players are on the field but the TEAM is every player in the dugout and on the field. The team includes Varsity and JV together. If a player asks to go and play JV because she would like to see more playing time we try to do that when possible, just to keep them on top of there game.

My DD sat her entire freshman season behind a senior. She/I was told that she needed to be "up here" to see how we do it on the varsity team. She played approx. a total of 4 games her freshman year. My bi*** was to at least let her play JV on days when there was not a varsity game just to get some swings. Never happened. Her skills digressed during the season, due to not seeing any live action/pitching. I believe she also got off to a slow start during her summer season because lack of playing time. I was thrilled when she made the varsity as a freshman, but will never think that it was in her best interests.

That's the best way to handle it, its also good to vent to people who understand your situation and keeping it away from school. I think you have it completely under control. Good luck the rest of the year. : )

DD's travel coach told her not to play JV if she didn't make varsity as it took her 2 weekends to get used to hitting travel ball pitching again after hitting against JV pitching last year. Thankfully not an issue.

You haven't seen anything -- our JV/Varsity dd has a slugging percent of over 1% and 687 batt ave. Any varsity team need her?!!!!!!! Too many of what all of you have said in our situation. As you can see numbers must not talk!!
