some of you are really missing topic i am not saying that all girls wont get adequet time to play every girl does play half or close to half of all the innings played.the problem is do you give them half of the innings at desired position i consider my self to be a pretty good coach but still have alot to learn and my strength is that i know i have alot to learn no big ego here.i am not a dictator trying to ruin dreams of dd playing where she wants to play the simple question is not how many innings should a girl play a tourney but if she is for example our #2 2nd baseman plays #1 rf how many innings is ethical to give her at 2nd

One of the biggest reponsiblity`s as a coach ..IMO....is to make sure you put the girls in the best possible situation to succeed If she LOVES 2nd base but is not being succsessful is that good for anyone???

I say equally split the time. Sometimes that won't happen due to run rule or time limit, but try to give them equal time.

I would think a coach would have to be a "dictator" when it comes to positions. You have to play them where it works has a team.

Personally, as a parent, I don't care if the coach plays the whole team out of position and makes sure everyone gets their playing time on Saturdays. As long as the best 9 are playing on Sundays that's all I care about. Winning on Saturday is nice, but winning on Sundays is necessary.

That is true if we are not playing between Monsoons like we were last year. How many teams didn't even get to play on Sundays due to their placement in pool play in 2008. I saw teams pitch #3 and #4 pitchers on Saturday to save the #1 and #2 for double elimination Sunday and they didn't even get to pitch all weekend. In reality the midweek double headers are the place to play the developing players and start your #1s and #2s on the weekends, if they get ahead then throw in a relief to preserve the starters. Too many lessons were learned last year by poor decisions based on trying to make everybody happy. Then again is it the goal of the team to have fun win or loose, or is it to develop a solid competitive team who is seeking to pursue college level play.

Coaching travel is a tough gig! You need to perform a balancing act between what is best for 11-12 individual girls, and what is best for the team as a whole. There is no perfect answer in this situation. All you can do is formulate a clear philosophy that you think is best, and communicate that from day 1. Make every decision with a clear conscience, and don't let the momma-ratzi influence you in any way. You will not make everyone happy, so don't try. Just do what you think is right based on your philosophy. If you can sleep well at night you are probably doing just fine.

From a parents point of view, where would you want your DD playing; as a #2 on a good team or as a #1 on an average team?

#2 on a good team, playing with better kids will make your DD a better player.

Semperfi, good question. I think the answer to that question is probably reflected in what the players goal is. Some kids just want to play, they are not worried about playing college ball or the prestige that goes with playing on a team. Some kids are looking to strictly improve their skills for their high school program. Some kids need to be pushed to get better and being a #2 at their position is good for them. I think your point is well taken, there probably is not an answer that covers every team and situation.

Think the vast majority of parents and players honest answer would be #1 on an average team.

I know in cali the really top flight teams carry 16 or 17 kids, but they play a ton more games and have alot more practice time outside. You dont get better watching players better then you play and there is only so much a coach can teach you in practice, nothing beats playing time to get better.

I agree u10 but that's only if you get to play. If my DD was a SS but was playing most of the time in the OF on a good team I would not have a problem with that. However, if she was the #2 SS and sat the bench and got limited playing time, I would rather be on as average team where she would get more playing time. As stated by mustohiofastpitch " its all about playing time"

We had to make this same decision this season for my daughter, she was offered 10th or 11th spot on a strong team that she had subbed for last year or go play for a weaker, mostly 13U team. I for the most part let my daughter make the decision and she chose to go with the weaker of the two.
She is the new teams lead off batter and a starting infielder/CF. This is her last year of Travel before High School next year and we both felt the playing time was most important. Funny thing about the decision she made, her new team played the old team this fall and beat them. So yes We both feel its better to be a #1 on the weaker team although her time with the stronger team was a good learning experience. Nothing beats playing time.

I need to ask for an opinion on this due to financial problems I was unable to go with my dd to nsa nationals in south carolina last season. I got updates every day about the second day my dd calls and says dad i have not got to play at all yet.I tell her not to worry she will get to play this goes on all week onthe final day my dd is in tears when she calls and says they lost and will be home later that night when she got home she informs me that during the week long tourny she only played about a total of 5 to 6 innings spread out through the week needless to say I was furious I did not pay for her to play and expect this especially at her first nationals she has played travel ball for three years now and this season was the first she hardly had any playing time. the manager is a great guy and very good teacher to the girls , but the coaches he has chosen were the type that if you were not one of his favorites you got loked down upon we are talking parents and players just would like to know what other people think of this am i just a p@#$#@@$ed off parent or were the coaches right.

My dd went to South Carolina for Nationals last year as well and she had a similar experience with playing time. She was picked up about half way through the season as a sub for the team she went with. I understood and so did she that she would not be getting as much time on the field as the original members of team but It would have been nice to see her get a little more time on the field then she did. I'm a single parent so just getting there, financially and the traveling so far from home on our own was a burden but it meant a lot to her to get to go. I just wish her memories of the experience were of getting to play and not sitting so much in the dugout in 100 degree weather.
