Are you referring to pitchers/catchers, or any players?

You need to clarify to which you are referring to. In travel ball, there are few instances where there are really a "number two".

The only people that complain about playing time are the "number 2's". If they want more playing time, they better start working harder to become "number 1's". With that much time and money invested, the coaches have to go with the best players for the positions. Equal playing time is for rec ball, fair playing time is for travel ball.

Some coaches give about all the playing time to the number 1's and can't keep a decent bench. You invest a year in a player and they book because you didn't play them enough. Champ game, go number 1's. Before that spread it around some so you keep your better number 2's and have a more solid team, deeper bench. IMO

i am referring moe to infielders i generally like to have the chemistry we alway try to keep pitchers fresh at least till the end.i wonder what do you give the number 2's i am thinking 2 to 5 innings a tournament maybe more if we are up alot. catchers we are blessed with two really good ones and a descent third but i feel that position is so demanding like pitching so they need some rest.

The Arizona State coach had 22 players on his team and he expected everyone to play hard when ever and where ever the girls were playing.
We are all called on to do great things at great times, enjoy life.

Ask any pitcher that's been to Nationals, or a double elemination. . . they are exhausted having to pitch without enough breaks. What happens when one is off or hurt. You need more than two pitchers. You will burn their arms out and ruin careers. What college pitches one player every game. Look how many girls in high school have arm problems due to the over pitching. Put a working system into place and all pitchers will end up with quality pitching time that allows them to hone their skills effectively. Just IMO

Arm problems? What problems do FP pitchers face? Assuming they a pre-existing problem? In todays world, with all the time limit games - wearing out a pitcher is rare.

Focus on player vs opponent ability. I work player based on what I know of the other team. If it is a situation in "pool" play where the player can focus on working out kinks or hone their skills, I will set the defense accordingly. I play my best players postionally for bracket play. All parents are advised of how I run the team at tryouts, the parent meeting and in their packets. If you decide to play for me and then have a problem with how postions are filled during the season, I will remind players and parents of what they have been told. No position on my team is guaranteed, it is earned. In the long run all positions will always have the best player playing.

But if your number tow does not get to see the action...and a time comes when you need her to perform? Will she let you and the team down when really it might not be her fault because she has never been in that situation.

Coming from the parent of a player who spent more time pulling splinters out of her rear end then playing her first few years in travel. Hardwork, Sacrafice and Committment is all that seperates your number one's and two's sometimes and let's not forget confidence.
After 2 and a half season with a team my daughter loved and coaches she loved we made the decision to leave for hopes of more opportunity. Although it hurt her a great deal to leave she did end up getting more opportunity and in a result of that she began to get confidence on the field that she was not given before.
Private lesson for 4 years, any time her pitcher needs someone to catch her private lesson she jumps on the opportunity. She loves the game, she wants to become better and she know that hard work will pay off. She is lead off batter for her new team and a starting infielder now and I contribute a lot of that to the coach who gave her opportunity and to her, she did not let leaving her first team beat her. She became more dedicated, she works harder and she gave herself goals( one of which is to make her old coaches see that she had something to offer all a long).
Coaches in the dog eat dog world of travel don't over look your number 2's. A lot of times they want it more then your #1's give them opportunity to shine, don't pull them out of the game the first error they make. These girls are your diamonds in the rough. I truly believe if a lot of these girls are given as much opportunity as your #1s they will shine for you.

A smart business man said "If I can not give a person a raise because of preformance, it is time to part ways" You hand pick your travel team, you should be picking players you can play, not to fill the bench! If you can't play any player at any time, time to part ways. I am speaking about all postions.

I never really got the whole kids sitting deal in travel ball. If you as a coach pick a team then I hope you think that every kid is good enough to play. I know some coaches pick an 11th and 12th player to offset the cost to the other players. Its kind of slimey. Now if your upfront with players before they sign I don't have a problem with it. Kids want to play and that's why so many coaches are not entirely honest with players they are trying to sign.

Its just an observation, I have not been in the situation but I have seen kids sit out in the sun for 14 hrs on a Saturday in the summer and get 2 ABs and a few innings in the field. Seems like a waste to me.
