playing time

Our coach has repeatedly and then again last Sunday told the whole team that their positions have not been determined (except pitching). They all have to (including the pitchers playing other positions) work their butts off in practice (and games). He will determine from that who is starting any given tournament or game. That to me is fair. All the parents are welcome to watch any practice (there are few who stay and watch). So, the parents and players know all this. There should be no (but I'm sure there will) discussion about playing time. Unfortunatly, the parents who complain are the ones who never watch their dd's practices. ;&

This statement is a broad stroke! Lots of parents have DD in other sports and can't make all practices!

I believe that she is talking about parents whose daughter is at practice but yet they never stay to watch. I know it is hard but I have three children all involved in several activities but I still find time to stay and watch 95% of the time. When they overlap I take one and my husband takes the other. When they all three overlap we rotate who we stay to watch...................
I understand that is not possible for everyone to do all the time but most should be able to stay to watch sometimes.......but many chose not to stay.

As a coach, I am finding it hard to stay! (our first year travel) I find myself wanting to suggest things but understand that they have a coach and don't need help unless they ask! I don't want to leave thinking they might need JUST hands! So I'm torn! :(:(:(

I know exactly what you are saying Sad627, those who feel the their dd should be playing (lets just say short )b/c she always played short in rec. ball but haven't watched dd's travel team practice so are completely unaware that there are several girls on the team better at that position. I'm one of those parents that loves to stay and watch and when my dd has a bad practice I will be the first one to let her know on the ride home. Those who don't take the time to watch and get upset when they show up at a game and just complain they're dd isn't playing drive me crazy! and then there are those who think they can bully the coach into a postion for their dd, don't they realize they are not doing their dd any favors or the Dad who helps Coach in order to get his dd a starting position that she hasn't earned. Does he realize how devistated his kid will be when she doesn't make the High School team b/c Dad's not the Coach anymore. Make them work for it!!!!!!

Sometimes this is not a bad thing. Just do it after practice. Tell your coaches that you can help catch in the outfield, or just catch the balls that are overthrown, or suggest a drill, etc.... I occasionally will jump in when they are short handed. But I try not to add anything but "nice throw" or "way to hussle". ;&

I agree somewhat with what you said sad627 I have never missed a practice of my dd's and always lend a hand to the coach or coaches if need be. But what about the coaches daughters that if not lets just say pitching goes to first then they decide to pitch her and then goes to a different position all in the same game and never gets sat do you think thats fair? It is not that I am speculating here I was the scorekeeper on my dd's team and discussed playing time with the coach many times after the game and was never given a straight answer. I know who played and how much, as the season went on playing time for certain girls continued to get shorter and shorter. luckily we did not move up with that coach but will have to if we stay with organization will move to another org. if the coaches stay the same.

I believe we have all at one time witnessed this same thing. I personally would like to see less politics in the game. I grew up playing a lot of sports and my Father or Step-Mother coached me in most of them. My Father made me work harder if anything for any playing time I would get. When the girls on the team where running 5 laps and I was running 8. I would ask him why and his reply was always the same "Nobody was ever going to tell him his girl was in the game b/c he was the coach". A little more of that these days would be nice.

No, fstptchbat, I don't always agree that your scenerio (which I have witnessed before) is necessarily fair. However, if the pitcher is one of the best nine in the other position then yes. I beleive that ALL (including pitching) positions are up for grabs each week. My dd pitches, but she also plays SS and played 3rd base last year. I don't totally agree with " number 1 or number 2 in any position. I believe that each practice is different. Some kids are dead on in their chosen postion in practice one night and totally off the next. But you go and give 110% where ever you are put.

My dd is a player that when she's pulled off pitching she's put into the field at 3rd or short. If she struggled on the rubber and is visibly upset she should be on the bench not the field. I think coaches are not only thinking defense they are also thinking offense. If you put her on the bench you remove her bat from the lineup. There is a lot to consider and I would never want to be the one to make those decisions. Fortunately my dd is one of the better players, but she busted her butt to get there with private instruction in pitching, hitting, and fielding. But there are definately times that she should be riding the pine.
