BEN HUR — Gate City took charge early and then held on Friday to win the nightcap of a Mountain 7 District baseball doubleheader at Lee High. The Blue Devils (4-9, 2-4) trailed 3-2 after the first inning but scored five runs in the second to build a 7-3 advantage over the Generals. Gate City’s four-run second inning was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Andrew Williams, and the Blue Devils added two more runs in the third on wild pitches. Lee (4-6, 2-4) pulled to within 9-7 in the seventh before Landon Turner came on in relief of starter Tyler Hamm to record the final three outs and pick up the save. Hamm earned the win with six innings of work. He allowed seven runs on seven hits, while recording five strikeouts. Jake Taylor went 3-for-4 and Lucas Larkins had two hits for Gate City. Lee got multiple hits from Tyler Tabor and Alex Stafford. In the first game, Lee scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a tie and held on for a 9-7 win. Stafford, Jonah Hilton and Nate Bailey had multiple hits for the Generals. Taylor finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for Gate City. Hilton picked up the win in relief, holding Gate City scoreless, allowing one hit and striking out three over the final 2 1/3 innings. UNION 10, RIDGEVIEW 0, 5 INNINGS BIG STONE GAP — Union’s Adam Cox accounted for all but four of the outs by Ridgeview in the Mountain 7 contest at Buster Taylor Field. Cox struck out 11 batters in the game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. He allowed three hits and did not walk a batter. Union (7-6, 3-3) managed only three hits but took advantage of nine walks and four Ridgeview errors to push runs across the plate. Mason Caldwell and Brennan Jones each had a hit and drove in a run for Union. Kalen Gardner added the other base knock for the Bears. Ridgeview (3-8, 0-5) got hits from Carson Sykes, Griffen Counts and Lucas Deel. J.I. BURTON 10, TWIN SPRINGS 3 NORTON — Derek Allen was strong on the mound and at the plate and got plenty of offensive support in the Raiders’ Cumberland District win over the Titans (9-4, 4-2). Allen threw only 80 pitches in the complete- game win. The right-hander gave up three runs — all in the third — on four hits, recorded 10 strikeouts and walked none. At the plate, Allen went 2-for-4 with a double for J.I. Burton (5-5, 3-2). Brady Winebarger finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Austin Jones was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Aki Godsey was 2-for-3 and Corey Mullins was 2-for-4 with a double. EASTSIDE 17, THOMAS WALKER 0 EWING — Nick Livingston and Blake Rhoten homered and Eastside (12-3, 7-0) continued its roll through Cumberland opponents. The loss dropped Thomas Walker to 5-6, 0-6 on the season. SULLIVAN NORTH 14-5, CLOUDLAND 0-0 KINGSPORT — Brayden Wilhoit and Hunter Dingus each threw shutouts for the Golden Raiders, who claimed a pair of shortened Watauga Valley Conference wins. In the 14-0 victory, Wilhoit and Zach Scott each had two hits and three RBIs. Peyton Robinson added three hits and an RBI and J.J. Fleenor also had two hits for North, which posted an eight-run second inning. On the mound, Wilhoit gave up two hits with one walk and struck out five. In the 5-0 win, North managed only three hits and all its runs were unearned after the Raiders took advantage of five Cloudland errors. Dingus allowed one hit and struck out four in three innings. VOLUNTEER 6-13, GRAINGER 0-7 RUTLEDGE — The bats were big for Volunteer in a doubleheader sweep of Grainger. In the first game, Gabe Musick smacked a two-run home run and Aaron Willis went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Heath Douthat pitched the win. In the second game, Volunteer had 10 straight hits in a nine-run third inning. Gabe Bass finished with three hits and three RBIs for the Falcons. Musick, Alex Wilson, Ethan Sargent, Willis, Eli Dixon, Douthat and Triston Winegar each had two hits. Dixon added three RBIs. DANIEL BOONE 10, UNICOI COUNTY 4 GRAY — Led by Zach Taylor’s three-hit effort, the Trailblazers pounded out 17 hits. Cade Elliott, Eric Rigsby, Hunter Adams and Easton Harrell each had two hits and two RBIs, and Matt Cox and Logan Rivers joined the two-hit parade. Caleb Wilson had three hits and an RBI for the Blue Devils. Troy Podvin drove in two runs. GREENEVILLE 7, DAVID CROCKETT 6 GREENEVILLE — The Pioneers made quite a comeback in the top of the seventh but fell just short. With two outs, Landon Quillen had an RBI single to make it 7-4 and Will Long followed with a home run. Grady Cash singled to put the potential tying run on base before the final out. Long finished with three hits, and James Broyles also homered for the Pioneers. Greeneville’s Avery Collins hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give the Greene Devils a 5-3 lead. SOFTBALL EASTSIDE 17, THOMAS WALKER 0 EWING — Kiarra Gibson and Liz Brace combined to throw a no-hitter, Jayme Salyers and Anna Whited each homered and Eastside (8-5, 3-1) rolled to the Cumberland win over the Lady Pioneers (0-10, 0-6). SULLIVAN SOUTH 12, SULLIVAN CENTRAL 2 KINGSPORT — Taylor McConnell worked five strong innings in the circle and her teammates supported her with eight hits and 12 runs. South broke open a 2-1 game with a 10-run fourth. Mackenzie Compton and Brynna Teal each had two RBIs and Nicole Troutman totaled two hits. DAVID CROCKETT 11, SULLIVAN EAST 0 DAVID CROCKETT 14, UNAKA 0 GREENEVILLE — Maddie McKee tossed a two-hit shutout and Riley Hope cracked a grand slam in the Lady Pioneers’ Tiny Day Classic victory over the Lady Patriots. McKee walked three batters and struck out four. Hope’s blast came during an eight-run outburst in the second inning. Lenzie Jenkins went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sydney Fox, Reagan Miller and Kara Weems each added two hits and Miller collected two RBIs for David Crockett (23-8). Against Unaka, the Lady Pioneers scored 10 runs in the first and got a grand slam from Weems, who didn’t allow a baserunner in the 3½-inning game. She struck out seven. DANIEL BOONE 4, SULLIVAN EAST 0 GREENEVILLE — Megan Ackerman rocked the shutout train, allowing three hits with six strikeouts and one walk in the Tiny Day Classic victory. Dannah Persinger had two hits for Boone (26-12).
