ELIZABETHTON — Brynna Teal wiped out a 3-0 David Crockett lead with a grand slam in the third inning and Sullivan South held on to defeat David Crockett 8-7 on Friday in the Wayne Hodge State Farm Classic. The Lady Rebels tacked on four more runs in the fourth before the Lady Pioneers made a last-inning charge that produced four runs and put runners on second and third. However, one batter after Riley Hope’s RBI double and a throw to the infield produced two Crockett runs, a 6-3 groundout extinguished the threat and ended the contest, which went five innings. Teal piled up six RBIs in her 2-for-3, two-run outing. Laura Dade went 2-for-2 with a double. Maddie McKee batted 2-for-2 and Mackenzie Baldwin went 2-for-3 for Crockett, both scoring twice. Sydney Fox and Reagan Miller contributed doubles. SULLIVAN EAST 7, CROCKETT 6 ELIZABETHTON — Back-to-back errors prolonged the bottom of the fifth inning, enabling Sullivan East to push across three runs and upend David Crockett in the Wayne Hodge State Farm Classic. Katelyn Loudy’s RBI double down the left-field line ended the contest. Crockett had scored twice in the top of the inning to go up 6-4. The Lady Patriots were led by Amber Turner at 2-for-2 and three RBIs. Loudy was 2-for-4 and Kylee Wolfe finished 1-for-1 with three runs and two walks. East pitcher Jillian Shackleford went the distance, yielding three earned runs and overcoming six walks. Crockett’s Mackenzie Baldwin batted 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Sydney Fox clubbed a two-run homer and Kat Pfeifer doubled and scored twice. HAPPY VALLEY 6, SULLIVAN CENTRAL 5, 5 INNINGS ELIZABETHTON — Allie Grindstaff’s two-out, two-run double capped a five-run rally in the top of the fifth inning, sending the Lady Warriors to past the Lady Cougars in the Wayne Hodge Classic. Earlier in the inning, Olivia Absher punched out an RBI single. Three batters later, Macy Puckett delivered a base hit to bring across two runs. With Grindstaff totaling three RBIs, Mikaela Hughes, Kaitlyn Roberts, Puckett and Claire Johnson collected two hits apiece for Happy Valley. Hughes also scored twice. The Lady Cougars got home runs from Madison Horne and Courtney Willis. NORTH GREENE 8, SULLIVAN CENTRAL 5, 5 INNINGS ELIZABETHTON — Jada Antonelli had two hits in three at-bats and Jacinth Crawford contributed a pair of RBIs in North Greene’s triumph in the Wayne Hodge Classic. Abi Painter double and had three runs. The Lady Cougars’ Jasmine Sheffield, Courtney Willis and Sydney Snapp each batted 2-for-3, with Sheffield tripling and scoring twice, Willis doubling and scoring twice and Snapp driving in two runs. POWELL 3, DANIEL BOONE 0 CORRYTON — The Lady Traiblazers were outhit 8-6 and unable to break through against Powell (26-2) in the Gibbs Invitational. Megan Ackerman had two hits, including a double, for Daniel Boone. Jaycie Jenkins connected for a double of her own. DANIEL BOONE 9, WILLIAM BLOUNT 4 CORRYTON — Megan Ackerman homered, doubled, had three RBIs and handled the pitching duties for the Lady Trailblazers. Like Ackerman, Jaycie Jenkins coupled two hits with three RBIs. Makenna Dietz and Nickolette Ferguson each contributed two hits to the victory. Dietz’s day included a double and Ferguson’s an RBI. TWIN SPRINGS 6, CASTLEWOOD 1 NICKELSVILLE — The Lady Titans picked up another Cumberland District victory behind Audrey Powers in the circle. Powers struck out nine and contributed to Castlewood leaving nine runners stranded. Belle Austin went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Baylie Compton went 2-for-4 with one run batted in for Twin Springs. Janakay Kiser led Castlewood, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. RYE COVE 10, EASTSIDE 9 CLINCHPORT — Hailey Byington gave the Lady Eagles the walk-off when she singled in Ashley Smith from third for the Cumberland win. Byington finished 3-for-5. Smith smacked a solo home run in the first inning, which was followed by four intentional walks. She scored three times. Haley Tomlinson, who also got the win in the circle, went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in the fifth and totaled four RBIs. Maricar Zamora had a triple for Rye Cove. Hannah Buchanan had a solo home run and Anna Whited had two triples for Eastside. BASEBALL GATE CITY 14, RIDGEVIEW 1 CLINTWOOD — Gate City picked up its first Mountain 7 District win in blowout fashion, using a six-run sixth to secure the run-rule victory. Jon Compton was 2-for-3 with a walk, double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Tyler Gardner and Charlie Quinn also had two RBIs each for the Blue Devils. Drew Morris got the win on the mound, striking out nine in five innings of work. TWIN SPRINGS 13, CASTLEWOOD 3 NICKELSVILLE — Justin Reed gave Castlewood fits, bagging four hits in the Titans’ Cumberland District victory. Reed doubled in the first, doubled in the second, doubled in the fourth and singled in the fifth. Titans secured the victory thanks to eight runs in the fourth inning. Tanner Dingus got the win for Titans. He allowed three hits and three runs over five innings, striking out five. EASTSIDE 14, RYE COVE 4 CLINCHPORT — Noah Rasnick had three RBIs and Tyler Sanders had a solo home run to give the Spartans a Cumberland road win. Cole Harness also helped out, going 3-for-4 and driving in two. Drew Richards got the win for in five innings of work, striking out six batters. Jacob Dishner went 3-for-4 for Rye Cove and scored twice. WISE CENTRAL 3, UNION 1 BIG STONE GAP — The Warriors escaped with a big Mountain 7 win thanks to two runs in the top of the eighth. Zach James led off the inning with a solo home run and Jarret Jessee singled to score a run. Bryson Collins got the win for Central with the final three innings of work. He struck out seven. Austin Gibson had a double for Union. VIRGINIA HIGH 4, ABINGDON 3 ABINGDON — The Bearcats got two crucial runs in the top of the seventh inning and had a great defensive bottom half to topple the Falcons at home in a nonconference matchup. The game ended when Cade Hungate was caught stealing going from second to third and was thrown out by Jamie Lathrop. ELIZABETHTON 15, VOLUNTEER 1, 5 INNINGS ELIZABETHTON — With Evan Carter, Ryan Wetzel and Logan Estep generated considerable firepower in the Cyclones’ win. Whipping up a 3-for-3 outing, Carter clubbed a two-run homer and scored three times. Estep went 2-for-2 and doubled home two runs, and Wetzel was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs. Corey Russell tagged a two-run inside-the-park home run and Jacob Mullins a two-run triple. Winner Colten Miller gave up an unearned run and just two hits over four innings. For the second consecutive day, Elizabethton victimized Volunteer with five extra-base hits. The Cyclones pinned a 13-2, five-inning loss on the Falcons on Thursday in which Volunteer’s Heath Douthat went 1-for-4, scored and knocked in a run. GIRLS SOCCER GATE CITY 8, RIDGEVIEW 0 GATE CITY — Callie McMurray continued her scoring onslaught by unleashing five goals in the Lady Blue Devils’ Mountain 7 rout of the Wolfpack. Jamie Watts recorded a goal and two assists, Amanda Vermillion and Grace Mullins notched a goal apiece and Caroline Dishner came up with two assists for Gate City. Mimi Strouth made six saves for Ridgeview.
