GATE CITY — Tuesday’s Mountain 7 District softball game between Wise Central and Gate City was a fight to the finish. The Lady Warriors led 7-3 after 6½ innings before being forced to turn back the Lady Blue Devils’ big comeback bid to secure a 7-6 victory. Gate City (6-6-1, 3-2), which scored two of its three seventh-inning runs with two outs, had a runner on first before a popup ended the game. Brook Porter fell just short of hitting for the cycle for Central (5-6, 2-4), finishing 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and a single. Cammie Lovelace went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Lady Blue Devils, who play at Union on Friday. TWIN SPRINGS 8, EASTSIDE 5 NICKELSVILLE — A big performance by Chenoa Dean helped the Lady Titans pick up a big Cumberland District win. Dean was 2-for-2 — a home run and a double — with two RBIs. McKenna Dean finished with three RBIs for Twin Springs. Lexie King and Carrie Boyd both drove in runs for the Lady Spartans. RYE COVE 13, THOMAS WALKER 3, 5 INNINGS CLINCHPORT — Ashley Smith belted two home runs and drove in five to power the Lady Eagles to the Cumberland victory over the Lady Pioneers. Hailey Byington went 3-for-3 with two doubles, scored three times and tallied four RBIs. She also got the win in the circle for Rye Cove. Talyn Dibrell had a triple for Thomas Walker and Hannah Schwartz recorded an RBI. DAVID CROCKETT 9, CHEROKEE 2 ROGERSVILLE — Behind 19 hits and a Kara Weems two-hitter, David Crockett tripped up Cherokee in Big 7 Conference play. Leadoff batter Sydney Fox turned in a 4-for-5 effort with three RBIs, Alyssa Suits went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and both players homered. Working around six walks, Weems racked up a half-dozen strikeouts. Both runs she surrendered were unearned. Katie Rosenbaum and Grace Jones had the Lady Chiefs’ hits. Paisley Lyons scored a run and drew three bases on balls. Crockett plays at Daniel Boone today at 4:30 p.m. If the Lady Pioneers win, they earn the outright Big 7 title. If they lose, Crockett and Boone share the regular-season crown. BASEBALL JOHN BATTLE 10, RIDGEVIEW 0 BRISTOL, Va. — Trojans pitcher Aaron Arnold allowed six hits en route to the shutout and the Mountain 7 win over the Wolfpack. The Trojans racked up 13 hits, including two doubles from Bryce Bowman and Jake Mumpower. Isaac Deel, Landon Moore and Mikey Statti each drove in a pair of runs. McKenzie Sproles recorded two hits for the Wolfpack, both singles. EASTSIDE 11, TWIN SPRINGS 2 NICKELSVILLE — Behind a home run and a double from Cole Harness, the Spartans got the Cumberland District road win. Harness finished with three RBIs off a 2-for-4 performance. Drew Richards also plated three runs after doubling twice and singling once. Justin Reed and Dylan Austin each had a double for the Titans. ABINGDON 11, LEE 1, 5 INNINGS ABINGDON — The Falcons made quick work of the Generals on their way to their 11th win of the season that kept them perfect in Mountain 7 District play. Thomas Francisco blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to blow open the game early for Abingdon. Cade Hungate got the win on the mound and went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Alex Shafford scored for the Generals, and Nate Bailey and Jonah Hilton had hits. DAVID CROCKETT 8, SULLIVAN EAST 7, 9 INNINGS JONESBOROUGH — A Tanner Treadway bunt and a Patriots error allowed Devin Foster and Jacob Jenkins to score with the tying and winning runs. Each team rapped out a dozen hits. Getting two apiece for the Pioneers were Will Long, Grady Cash, Luke Larkins, Jenkins and Foster. Long homered, and Cash, Larkins and Landon Quillen doubled. Quillen drove in two runs. The Patriots’ Tanner Leffew and Eli Milhorn had three hits — including a double — apiece. Brantley Ellis and Elias Arnold tripled and collected two hits each. The last of seven Crockett pitchers, Jacob Rambo picked up the win with an inning’s work. CHEROKEE 8, GRAINGER 2 RUTLEDGE — Japheth Curtsinger went 3-for-4, scored twice and combined with Nick Collins on a one-hitter for the Chiefs. Collins started with three scoreless and hitless innings, totaling six strikeouts against no walks. Curtsinger went the rest of the way to record the win. Steve Owen, Ethan Crowder, Nick Collins and Trey Courtney each contributed a pair of hits to the Chiefs’ effort. Courtney had three RBIs, Collins drove in two and Crowder scored twice. GIRLS SOCCER GATE CITY 1, WISE CENTRAL 0 WISE — Callie McMurray saved the day for the Lady Blue Devils when she scored the winning goal off an assist from Ashlyn Hammonds. Madison Grizzle held strong in goal for Gate City, making four saves in the Mountain 7 victory. Stephanie Whitfield made 13 stops in goal for Central. BOYS SOCCER WISE CENTRAL 2, GATE CITY 1 WISE — The Warriors picked up the Mountain 7 win behind two goals off the foot of Juan Onate during the first half. DAVID CROCKETT 0, SCIENCE HILL 0 JONESBOROUGH — The homestanding Pioneers played traditional power Science Hill to a scoreless draw.
