proper umpiring ruling or not

Yes, you are correct. I noticed that when I read the post, but forgot to comment on it.

For instance....fly ball hit directly behind shortstop, where the SS could easily take a few steps back and settle under it for a routine catch. If an outfielder comes in and makes the catch instead, it's still an infield fly.

You all will love this one.... yday in 12U rec ball game. 2 outs, runners on 2nd and 3rd. Batter pops up about 12ft high, about 4ft in front of the plate, catcher makes play on ball - umpire yells "infield fly, batter is out". Catcher misses the ball (never touches it) and ball rolls foul....

Obviously, because there were 2 outs it couldn't have been an infield fly. But lets assume there was only 1 out, could this have been an infield fly or should it have been a foul ball?

By definition, an Infield Fly MUST be a FAIR batted ball. So, if the ball becomes foul for any reason...it's just a plain old foul ball.

Umpire missed it 3 ways:
- 2 outs
- runners not in requisite positions - only with runners on 1st & 2nd or bases loaded.
- foul ball

Did the umpire fix the call to foul ball?

Wilmington umpires ????? I didn't know they had fastpitch umpires in Wilmington

By this ruling, I can see they still don't.

I just kind of assumed that folks reading this would understand #1 and #2 also had to apply, in addition to #3...but maybe not!

He might have even missed it a fourth way. Did the catcher miss the ball because it wasn't catchable with ordinary effort...or, did she just miss it? I could easily imagine the former with such a short pop-up and the catcher having to come up out of her crouch.

I also wondered if the final call was "Foul Ball".
