Does anyone have any info on how things went at the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North (formerly the "Ringor Showcase"), held at Kent State University? ?
Was going to try and make up there this weekend, but wasn't able to.

I was there yesterday all day. A ton of girls there and it appeared to me quite a lot of college coaches. I imagine they were pleased with the new format of all of the girls getting cage time. At one game alone at 5:00, I saw Ohio Univ., Marshall, Ashland, Detroit, Muskingum, Kenyon, Hillsdale and many other schools I can't remember or that I hadn't heard of.

We saw a lot of talent there. There were several good pitchers there. Today we saw one hit 61 & 62 consistently, but many were around 51 and 55 range. We saw a lot of great plays by players.

We also saw colleges from Florida, and a few other states. My daughter said she saw U of Michigan. We checked with Mr. Whiteside to see if there was a list of colleges in attendance, and he said someone took the sign in sheets that were on the table and that there were nine pages.

It was much better than last year as far as colleges in attendance, and most stayed until early afternoon.

We were also impressed with the number of coaches in attendance at the Kent State Showcase Camp. For pitchers and catchers, it was a great opportunity for the coaches to walk among the players and see them up close. One time there were all but about two coaches standing and watching the junior lefty pitcher by us. There were a good 30 coaches standing in the catching part of the camp as well.

It was an excellent weekend. My daughter is a sophmore and it was her first year there and we were impressed with the number of coaches at both the Kent State Camp and QDNS. It was very well organized and run, everything was on time. My daughter played her game at noon on sunday and there were so many coaches watching it was crazy. At her cage session on Saturday night there were a lot watching. They announced the MVP's of each session quickly and the girls were excited to see that. We saw Ohio U, Ball State, Akron, Toledo, UD, Wright State, Cornell, Ashland and many many others. It was well worth the trip to get the exposure. We will definetly try to go back and are even hoping to go the the southern showcase in September because there was so much exposure here.

luvthegame,
The pitching speeds seem slower then I would expect. If your dd was a pitcher was the gun "slower" than what she uses at home?

by watching the pitching it doesn't seem the gun was slower.
i thought it was a well run event but the pitching definately
wasn't overly impressive. i only saw two or three girls throw over 60
and rarely the rest over 55. but the college coach's were there.
there was a ton at both the Kent state adn the QDSN. and the pitching at
the Kent State Camp was great. and the coach's were inforce there watching.
I think both staff's at the camp and the showcase were excellent. very easy to see who was there to work and everything was marked so you knew where to go. excellent weekend.

My daughter did not pitch at the showcase. However, one travel coach told me that the Jugs gun would probably be 2-3 mph faster than what was being displayed.

My daughter caught for one girl who we were told regularly pitches 62. Her speeds over the weekend we consistently 52. I asked my daughter, and she said that the best pitch for this pitcher was her changeup and requested that it be called often. To her credit, she did not give up a lot of hits. She also said that this pitcher gets hit pretty hard when pitching her 62 mph fastball.

It makes me wonder what is more important to show off--a change up that really messes up the batter, or the fastball with speed that really wows the coaches.

Not sure I could say it was overly an impressive weekend. Coming in late at the last minute and spending hotel expenses etc. I would say most the events were set up to showcase pitchers that stated they could throw well into the 60's. This was a reach for most probably hitting 53 - 54. Watching college coaches responses to the radar guns was very interesting. Most left right after the 1st couple of readings and then the rest soon left right after strike outs didn't happen. If the pitchers were well into their statements or mini-bios, I thought it was a good weekend for them. Learned a lot. probably will not be back. Truth goes a long ways.

Someone who normally thows 62 was consistently throwing 52 mph? Either the gun was really slow or someone was being less than truthful!

This was our first QDSN and I was impressed with the set up, but disappointed in the follow through on the batting in the Cages. Some umpires/Staff ran them through, and some kinda let the cages drag. Saw the Cage time prior to DD time on Saturday and the girls got 4 AB's. The 2 Follwing Teams only got 2 AB's (Same amount of time) w/different Umpires/Staff running that time. On her Sunday cage time they did get 3 AB's, but saw another couple of groups get only 2 AB's. Overall DD only got 7 AB's :(...........

Pitching was good, but I thought the Hitters were better. If these were outdoor games there would have been at least 15-20 220 foot+ home runs. There was also a very high number of hard hit balls both days.

Coaches galore and was satisfied with that part of it. Talked to a few and they were impressed with the procedure, but by the last games/cage times they was few to none left. It really hurt the last game time players. As a parent we learned what more we have to do in the recruiting process, and came away feeling pretty good about DD's performance.

With my DD being a freshmen this year, we have started the process of trying to get her into next years QDSN, and the QDSS, this fall.

I appreciate all the feedback, and look forward to any other comments!!

DD was at pitching showcase for 2nd year. Was disappointed that they did not clock them this year. Last year they were clocked on 2 pitches of their choice. Was hoping to compare #s.

Have heard something about new NCAA rule about not clocking girls (running, pitching, etc). Is this true?

I will continue to post my kid as an honest speed and ERA. I hope college coaches respect that. If not, they can end up at these showcases maybe playing against my kid.

My DD did the pitching and IF for the Kent State Showcase and catching and OF for the QDSN, but I did see several pitchers try to do both showcases as pitchers and I think it hurt a few of them, as did some of the QSDN schedules.

During the Kent State portion pitchers threw a variety of pitches as requested for about an hour and a half straight without pause, and I didn't see anyone who wasn't pretty well gassed by the end of it. (I was catching and was exhausted just from that - not to mention that my knees and catching hand were swollen 2-3 times normal afterward.) On Sunday our schedule had us move from the cages to immediately preparing for our game - which meant that the pitchers and catchers had very little rest. More than one pitcher went from throwing 58-59 at the beginning of a game to struggling to hit 51 at the end of it.

Yes TheBearMay-

You and your daughter were pretty flushed after the pitching portion. It would have helped if you used a bucket!!

I thought the weekend went very well, coaches were there en mass up until about 2 Sunday, the girls were able to show themselves equally in all aspects, There were some shots that would have been out of most parks that were fun to watch, but overall very satisfied with what was told was going to be offered as to what was offered.

Everyone's account on pitching is correct, 95% never got over 56-57 mph, but there were plenty of talented folks. As per times listed, I know my DD listed pop times under 2.0 based off late summer tryouts that they told her she did. This weekend, she couldn't get under 2.03. But with that said, her accuracy was spot on, but there were allot of other girls throwing no where near the base. As a coach, would you rather give up time vs accuracy and also I know people take different times recording based upon their own reaction time pushing a button vs. pitchers with a radar gun. But at least Sunday the same person was timing it all, so everyone was on the same page.

what would you rather see speed or accuracy?

But overall a kudos to Kirt and his crew for a great opportunity for the ladies!

if a coach is interested in your dd they will come to some of your summer tournaments, grades and attitude are also thrown into the mix, jugs guns need recalibrated from time to time, throw bushnell guns away

I think that the weekend went great,Kurt and gang ran a nice showcase again this year,my DD was in the Kent State clinic and was exhausted after it for the day, sure showed in the game she had at 5:00.She hit 60 twice but decided to throw more curves and Rises through-out the game. I was clocking her prior to the camp with a jugs gun and it seemed to be about 3-4 mphs different. The cage idea was nice though there was a lot of sitting around if you weren't a pitcher/catcher - Great turn out and I also thought the hitters were better prepared this year.

classics you are correct. ? sooner or later they have to prove theey can live up to their words. ? i always give coaches my dd's id number and times from the nfca camps she has attended or a camps where they can be verified. ?you have to be honest. ? i think most summer coaches as well as college coaches have a pretty good idea of a players velocity and more importantly her effectiveness without the actual speed gun reading.

Our DD was very please with the interest and number of college coaches at the KS pitching showcase. We were on the same end as the Bears DD, there were at least four or five College coaches at a time watching this group of Jr. pitchers. These ladies did not get many breaks. Several of the coaches asked our DD to throw a series of pitches for them. There was a lot of writting in thier books.
