In a coaches opinion what should be a pitchers ERA be to be average, successful, or above average. I'm interested in 16u and 14u but I'm sure others would be interested in 12, 10, and 18.

Also how many innings of play would you expect your pitchers to work in the summer season?

What percentage of Strike Outs would be expected?

What percentage of Walks are acceptable?

Old rule which has been changing was 2 strike outs to every base on balls...... so strike out 2 for every walk that was the old rule which has been rewritten a lot now days by good pitching coaches.

In my opinion between 2-3 is a good ERA for a competitive travel ball schedule. Below 2 is excellent. Keep in mind scoring can really affect this number if not done correctly.

We have 44 games to date. Our 3 pitchers have 117, 108 and 37 innings.

Depends on how many runs your team is scoring. If your team is scoring more than three runs a game on average then your pitchers ERA should be under three. If your team is having a hard time scoring runs you can't put all the burden on your pitchers to keep the other team from scoring.

On an upper level team that plays a much tougher schedule where scoring runs is a lot more difficult, a 3.00 ERA is not going to cut it. It is going to have to be under 1.50 but under 1.00 would be preferred.

We teach our pitcher walks are like giving up free runs. She does her best to keep it to one or two per game. She wants K's but she also needs her defense behind her. We also live by the idea you have to hit, hit, hit. If yo give up a couple runs you have to get three. It only takes one run to win, so get one more than the other team. At 12u it was like that, now she is moving to 14u, all the girls can hit. Its going to be a learning experience.

Many different opinions coming in. I'm not sure if there is a single correct answer. ERA is important, but is it more important than W-L? (Ask CC Sabathia about his years with the Indians...) Mostly, be honest. Did your defense really make those "errors" that benefit your Earned Run stats?

As for innings pitched? Kinda grey there, too. Are you blessed with Starting Pitchers? Or does one girl carry the load? A manager has to do the best with the talent on his roster.
