Releases merely protect a team from having another team take a player off their roster without their knowledge and to give them some leverage in collecting team equipment and/or money owed from a player that is leaving the team. However, a team cannot stop a player from leaving if they have met their obligations.
Misconceptions about being redlined (i.e. frozen) on a team's roster for championship play:
- Releases are for non-championship play and do not unlock a player from a relined roster.
- Moving up does not unlock a player. Players are locked for the division (i.e. Girls Fastpitch) and age groups are classifications within a division.
Players are locked onto redlined rosters as long as that team is in championship play. Once a team drops out of championship play, its players are eligible to be pick-up players for other teams in their association (region for 18-Gold).
