We are starting this year at 20/ first year certified umps, 25 for second year, 30 for third up to a cap of 35. Alot of school kids do it for us and need to be a minimum of 14 before the league plays and have taken the classes.

That's kinda what I figured. We've been paying $35 for one ump for the last four years. Last year they started tacking on an additional $5 "assignment fee" for the guy doing all the bookings as well.

by the sounds of it you are using and umpires organization. that is where you give them your schedule and the handle umpires from there. having run a boys f league (13 and 14yr old) league for 6yrs in akron with at one time 30 plus teams you may be better off paying the little extra that you do.
i had a chief of umpires and also had to deal with 8 or more area organizations who made up this league. i would have payed 50 dollars an umpire to sub all that out to an organization that handled all the headaches that come with scheduling. it all depends on the size of your league. either way good luck

I pay $ 40 per game and use only OHSAA certified umpires. This is for baseball and softball. We have done this for close to 10 years with great response out of our parents. This also has calmed down the out of control parents that we used to have. I would not promote the use of kids in any umpiring situation period. I have been an umpire for 18 years and it is all I can do to keep some of these parents in control at times. Also No umpire under 18 years of age either for liability concerns. It is worth every penny just to have an umpire doing these REC games. Been on both sides of the fence with coaches and kids umpiring games, you are just borrowing trouble.

You have the luxury of paying $40 for a rec softball game? ?I know of no community around my area where OHSAA umpires will come and umpire rec games for $25 (the going rate for OHSAA umpires). ? $40 is a lot of money for rec leagues to support.

I have had no problems with high school players umpiring rec games. ?I totally understand the handling of parents issues, and there is always someone within the organization watching these games to make sure the umpires are treated appropiately. ?Personally I think you are missing the boat by not having the high school players, who most of the kids look up to, helping out the youth of their community. ?Besides, when are we to start training these players to be umpires, if they want to become sanctioned umpires? ?Why not start young?

We have strict guidelines that are in our rules and those who do not abide by them, will not coach again. The majority of our coaches have gone through the NYSCA coaching class, and all new coaches must attend and that has helped some see the light. You will always have one or so a year, but one out of 76 teams isn't too bad.

The board stands by this theory and some have not been asked back.

At the end of the day it is a rec league and the girls are there to learn the game. I always told my parents that even if the ball bounces to the plate and the ump calls it a strike, it's a strike and they are not to say a word. We have steps in place to have those discussions with our umpire committee which are ok, but again all the kids are learning, even the umps.

It's those darn 4 year old Tee ballers complaining of that strike zone that kill us :)

Mike I been there with having the high school ball players doing coach-pitch games to start out with $25 per game. The first couple of weeks went fine . Then school let out and they all became very undependable. There is nothing like scrambling around for one wayward kid umpire let alone several. The going Rate for A.S.A. umpires is $25 this year, next year it will be $30. But the going rate for OHSAA umpires is $40-$45 per game. You are lucky to pay $25 with the cost of gas and travel time $25 is a steal. Enjoy it while you can.

Dan,

You bring up a good point about dependability. I guess I have been blessed with kids who show up on time and want to help and make some money. I know when I was growing up, I loved umpiring because of the money. And, I guess, at the time I was helping younger kids.

I have had dependability issues with OHSAA/ASA umpires too. We call them one day before the game, and they still don't show. I am not saying this is a big problem, but let's put it this way, I am glad the games start on time with umpires, whether they are high school kids or adults.

I think $25 is a lot of money to today's youth (maybe I'm naive?), for 1 hr and 10 mins. work. I know they can't work at Wendys and make that kind of money. Plus they get a tan :)

Our parks uses a service that went from $30.00 a game to $35.00 a game plus $3.00 a game scheduling fee. All are well trained adult umpires and well worth the expense knowing they will be compentent and dependable.

We went to paying OHSAA umpires all the way down to and including 10U. This was mainly to keep the coaches and fans under control. By having someone who actually knows the rules can prevent alot of trouble. Its well worth the money, to keep the fans and crowd under control.
