Where were you at Beavercreek Greg?? I was holding a walking taco for you. LOL

Sorry about that Tom, Mrs. Gopher thought it best to cut grass since we will be on the road all summer and didn't want to get the goats out. :lmao: Would have rather had the WT. :mad:

I agree on the lack of a list so far. If they end up not having it, what happens to the berths ?

Each region gets 2 ASA/USA berths for their Regional Championship, regardless of the size of the region or the number of teams entered. What happened to your region's other berth?

If they have more entrants than berths in an age group, they need to play the games to award the berths - even if it's just a 3-game series between 2 teams. They can't just pick one team over another to get a berth.

If they have enough berths for all the entrants in an age group, they can just award the berths to the entrants without playing any games. This has happened in the past where SoCal teams got berths from uncontested National Qualifiers in other regions without having to show up.

Unused berths are returned to HQ and awarded to teams in other Regionals based on order of finish.

Thanks for clarifying .. it is a shame that such a valuable berth is belittled by a late announcement date ... A berth of this quality should be contested with a solid field of teams... I hope they get 6-8 teams - even 4 good ASA 'A' teams would be good.

The reality is that there are few teams that are not 'trying' to go to Nationals that would even go should they get it. It is a big committment in terms of travel/time and the level of competition they will find there will beat them up good if they are not deserving.

We knew the announcement was coming, so we held off on finalizing our schedule until it was out. The date surprised us a bit, but we will make it work

same here... and it's usually in early July or late June.

Thats funny you said that! I assumed it was sarcasim, but recently found out how true that statment was. I contacted the TD and requested a team list and registration. And was told it would be emailed to me and after repeated calls and emails and PM not heard or seen anything. Its a shame to just give births away instead of earning them! Oh well!

Will this tournament be "closed" again this year (that is, only METRO Cincinnati teams may play?)

Thanks.

@pride1:

Actually when I asked that question it was because of my mistaken belief that this thread was about a Cincy Metro qualifier. Instead the thread is about the Region 9 closed qualifier, which is open to all Region 9 teams but not to teams from outside Region 9.

It is too bad that Ohio berths to USA/ASA are being awarded the same weekend in two different tournaments. I hope that this doesn't happen again. It looks like Cincy Doom 96 is having to drop the qualifier in Strongsville (which has listed Doom as an entered team) to play the Region 9 event.

I have no dog in this discussion as my kid is not even playing summer ball this summer but it sounds like an attempt to gerrymander a berth for someone. Maybe there is a much better explanation but the whole idea of holding a national quailfier and announcing it a month ahead of time sounds like someone is playing games with this event. MD

i would tell you but I'm sworn to secrecy ......... JK , I have no clue . I've got ideas about whats going on but can't say with certainty ..... my guess is Organization A that can't compete at States or Dayton is hoping to gain a bid without much competition . could be all wrong , and even if someone is doing something kin to that it's perfectly legal. MD

emailed Michelle... she said registration "is not looking good" and she will let us know how the Metro teams look as well.

Better start lining up now, so she can hand out the berths like last year. :lmao:

I am not aware of any specific organization or team that is involved with running this tournament. I would be amazed if there is anything underhanded going on here. You may be able to claim incompetance but I seriously doubt that there is anything shady is going on. I know Cincy Doom 96 has registered to play in the 14U and is very interested in winning the bid to the USA/ASA Nationals. We rearranged our schedule so that we could try for the bid in our backyard rather than incur the expense of travelling 4 hours to do it. I can assure you we are not ducking anyone.

@bergy1331:

I don't think anyone is accusing Cincy Doom 96 of ducking competition. That team certainly plays an aggressive schedule the rest of the season.

I think it is a real shame that these three age group competitions for USA/ASA berths were not sufficiently or timely advertised to the Ohio fastpitch community. A word of advice for coaches in the future, however: under the ASA Code, these tournament have to be published to the JO Olympic teams by January 1 of each year. I am fairly positive that the ASA considers this to be accomplished when the tournaments are posted on the ASA site. Just go the the ASA site and drill down until you find the listing of tournaments. For this year, it appears at http://www.asasoftball.com/tournaments/current_finals.asp

EDIT: HOLD THE PHONE. I just got done playing around with the link above and discovered that, to the best of my efforts, there is no listing whatsoever for this Region 9 tournament on the national ASA web site. So how did the notice provision under the ASA Code get satisfied for this tourney? I'm not saying that the tourney should not be held and that the Region 9 berths should not be awarded, but boy, as far as I can see there is no way that teams other than those attending the Metro Cincy meeting could have known about this tournament before the April posting on OFC.

bergy -- in no way shape or form did I intend the 96 doom has anything to do with this event. Heck they finished top 1/3 or close at ASA nationals as a 13u team last year. They hide from no one. don't need to. MD
