BIG STONE GAP — Simon says the Union boys soccer team gets to keep playing. Sean Simon scored on a last-minute header and the Bears beat Richlands 3-2 in the Region 2D quarterfinals Monday night. Andrew Goodman provided the cross for Simon's goal on a corner kick. The Bears will take on Virginia High on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol, Va. The Bearcats eliminated Gate City in the quarterfinals, 3-0. LEBANON 5, WISE CENTRAL 0 WISE — Alden Wilson scored three goals in the second half to power Lebanon's rout of Wise Central in the Region 2D quarterfinals. The Pioneers advanced to play Graham, a 6-0 winner over John Battle, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol, Va. Tuesday’s semifinal winners meet for the regional title on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Sugar Hollow Park. GIRLS SOCCER WISE CENTRAL 2, MARION 0 MARION — Sarah Livingston and Hope Collins scored and the Lady Warriors shut out the Scarlet Hurricane in the Region 2D tournament. Stephanie Whitfield made nine saves in earning the shutout. Lauren Mulkey and Hannah Large each had an assist for Central, which meets Gate City on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Richlands. The Lady Blue Tornado play John Battle at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal matchup at Richlands. The semifinal winners play Thursday at 6 p.m. for the championship. BASEBALL VIRGINIA HIGH 7, RIDGEVIEW 0 BRISTOL, Va. — Justin Lewis and Michael Bradley each drove in a pair of runs in the Bearcats’ Region 2D quarterfinal win over the Wolfpack. Virginia High starter Zach Griffith worked five innings and held Ridgeview to four hits. He struck out seven. Bradley went 4-for-4 to lead a 14-hit barrage for the Bearcats, who await the winner of Tuesday’s rain-delayed Wise Central vs. Grayson County game in Wednesday’s semifinals at Boyce Cox Field. Tazewell and John Battle play in the other semifinal Wednesday night. The championship is set for Thursday at Boyce Cox Field. SOFTBALL RICHLANDS 3, UNION 0 RICHLANDS — Katlynn Baldwin had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Lady Tornado past the Lady Bears in the Region 2D quarterfinals. Mackenzie Osborne pitched a four-hitter for Richlands, which advanced to the semifinals Tuesday night against the Trojans at John Battle. Micah Elkins had two singles for Union. Lebanon and Ridgeview meet at 5 p.m. in Tuesday’s other semifinal. The Lady Pioneers eliminated Gate City 8-2 and the Lady Wolfpack dumped Virginia High 6-1 in Monday’s regional quarterfinals.
