It would help to know what the fielders did with the ball and what the umpires called.

Also, this shouldn't be posted in "Ohio ASA Tournaments" section. :)

How many outs... only 1 runner on? was it a pop up? or line drive or grounder? what else happens? Did the ball get through? Did the 2B pick it up and tag the runner, or tag the base for the force out?

I believe if the ball got through grounder/line drive and the runner advances to 2B and the hitter gets to 1B then all are safe.

Not really ant different than hit and run, and it turns out to be a pop up.

1 out ..runner on 1st..grounder to 2nd baseman fields it clean and goes to tag the runner ..but the runner stops & back peddles toward 1st 2 avoid the tag....also giving the batter time to get to 1st safely....this was Asa womens league...lol

That's a common myth and one I've dealt with three or four times already this season. There's no rule that says a runner can't retreat toward a previous base.

All you have on this play is...a runner who is off the base and has not yet been retired! The defense needs to put the runner out, or try to tag her, or tag second base, or...something!

There is no call at all. It's only going back toward home plate that is an out call. This ump was simply confused about the rule. If you couldn't go back toward first base, every single runner who reaches first would be out on the next pitch after they get their leadoff and then returned to first!
