Rule Question

Can someone show me where in the rule book- ASA, HS or USSSA where it talks about :

A batter starting out on the left side to slap and then changing to become a right handed batter ? Is it legal after 2 strikes?

it is probably right in front of me but I can not find it anywhere in any of the rule books.

I have my answer in the back of my mind but I do not know if I'm right or not. I've heard only before 2 strikes and then any time if she asks for time and asks to make the switch.

The count has nothing to do with it. A batter can switch sides any time as long as time is called.

I have had batters all the time, you can switch every pitch if you want.
We had 2 on dds hs team switch after 2 strikes. Pony I know you can also.
NSA, USSSA. finding an exact rule I don't know, best way I have gotten the answers is put out the Bretman call and also I have sent emails to the UICs of the diff. sanctions and they have always responded back to me.

Thanks for the response

i have been letting them switch no matter how many strikes as I can not find anything in the rule book that relates to it- ASA, HS or USSSA

i got yelled at by a coach the other day that swore that with 2 strikes you can not switch. The coach that had players switching had several so this drove the other coach nuts. I stuck to my guns as no one could prove to me otherwise with a rule from the book.

Another RULE MYTH raises it's ugly head! :D

Seriously, how many people have ever heard some version of this rule, where there's some sort of restriction on a batter switching sides of the plate, like with two strikes? Probably most if they've been around baseball or softball. Enough that the "story" gets passed down from season-to-season. It is a commonly told tale!

Like most other rule myths, there's some grain of truth in this, but folks get it just a little bit wrong. There is a real rule covering this, it's just not what some folks think it is.

Yes, a batter may switch sides an unlimited number of times and regardless of the count. What batters are prohibited from doing is stepping directly across the plate when the ball is live and the pitcher is in position to pitch. If she does, she's out That's a real rule that really is in the rule book. It is aimed at preventing the batter from distracting the pitcher, not at restricting the batter from ever being allowed to switch sides.

This is another I can remember hearing when I played little league baseball as a kid!

I think it is illegal to be on both teams rosters. LOL!

Seriously, there would be nothing wrong with switching bats as long as the umpire grants the player a timeout to go get the bat. For speed of play, some organizations (ASA maybe?) require you to stay close to home or keep one foot in the batters box in between pitches.

Thanks Bretman

I know of the rule that they can not switch sides while ball is live - found that in rule book but could not find anything on the other so I didn't know if I was just not seeing it or if it didn't exist.

I also remember this myth from baseball and playing when I was younger so when the coach brought it up it sounded familiar but since I could not find anywhere in the rule book prohibiting it I allowed it. Glad to know that wsa the correct call.
