Running the Bases Speeds

Unless your kid's a slapper, just shoot for a flat 3.0 home-to-first time. That's decent college speed. If she's a good slapper with a .500 OB% or better at quality showcase tournaments, she's college material - don't even bother measuring her speed - she's FAST!

If you REALLY want to get an accurate time, front toss to her, and time the run from contact. That's what the laser traps simulate, which are generally at the corner of the right batter's box. An HONEST 3.0 time will beat out a lot of left side hits and bunts at the high school and 12u level.

The variance in reflexes between different people can result in nearly a half-second error with a cheap stopwatch. The better camps will have at least 2 (sometimes 3) staff members running watches. With 3, they toss the high and low times and keep the middle.

OR... you can simply tell your friends that your DD has a home-to-first time of 2.5, home-to-home of 10.8 and has a 68 mph fastball. Yep - that sounds a lot better... :lmao:

I seem to recall from a post a year or two back that the maximum home to first time to qualify for Team USA was 2.9 seconds. Now tell me, could Bustos or Nuveman really run that fast?

ha ha ha... Power Disclaimer !!

12.6 Flying Dude at 10U ?? Wow... I Just Time our 14U Girls and 12.01 was the Best and the Kid Flys...(Though she did slightly stumble twice ) Next best time was 12.4.

The Thing about Speed is this . Can you get that Kid to Actually RUN That fast in Game time. Many wont... But if you put a clock on them LOOK OUT !!

Well, at least I can nod knowingly now, when I peak over a coach's shoulder at dd's tryouts.

As far as college goes, 2.5-3.0 is considered unbelievable speed! I play on a 18U team (West Side Thunder) and i'm a recent converted lefty and I was clocked at 2.8 from home to first. I can tell you most division I colleges look for a home to home time of under 12 seconds and a home to first time of under 2.8 seconds. I assume a time less than 3.0 seconds for home to first for 18U players would be considered fast with 3.2 seconds being about average. For home to home times UNDER 12 seconds would be fast and 12-13 seconds probably average. I'm not sure about the times for 13-14yrs though.

Average would be for a FAst Runner...Tho. Not all Girls can run that fast. I know form Coaching fr 6 yrs. that Speed a Gift that not ALL Have.

Yes you are correct. Speed is a gift that not all people have. But, anyone can increase their speed though by working at it. I know plyometrics help you get the job done! =] But yes a 3.2 would be the average for a fast runner. I should have added that in my comment before. Thanks for catching that! =]

It may be average at 18U if you included everyone on the team roster where you may have several big girls, but at 18U a player slower than 2.9 has the odds against them being safe at first on the bunt or infield slap.

Thanks rdelawder: Been a long week at Nationals. Ask Larry , and he will tell you Swifty's speed after playing against you. His comment " How do you defend her". It was 2.84 at WSU slapper camp and they time them you home to first as a sprint. Only one kid under 2.8 at the camp. Can't wait when they move the rubber back to 43 and bunt 1/2 back to the pitcher, it will be a field day for the swift runners.

I measure a 60' sprint for my team. On my 16u team this year we have 3 at about 2.75 and three more at 2.8-2.85. No swings just run 60'. This is the fastest team I have ever had and we have had more D1 coaches looking than ever too. It make the team OB% higher and the Outfield smaller.
