Running the Bases Speeds

Okay, again, how do college camps & recruiters usually time players at camps & combines? I am asking because we are getting ready to hit the Fall camp circuit and then on to the 16u "college sweepstakes" years, over the next few years.

My dd is a right handed batter. Just timed her casually with very little warm-up during a younger team's drill at our try outs this past weekend:

3.12 ... H-1B (from right side) - from bunt "contact" to thump at 1B - didn't allow for 1st step out of box ... just "ping to thump")
3.01 ... H-1B (from left, same as above "ping to thump)

12.06 ... H-H

So do college coaches ask you to time from your normal "playing stance" in box (L vs R?), or just an "equal stance" to gage "apples to apples" speed? She has long legs, stealing bases is MUCH easier that getting out of box and down the line due to "starting" positions. She would do well if it were football, and everyone lines up the same for 40's.

Footwork out of the box from right side kills my kid's time, but she steals bases pretty easily due to a rocker start that gets her up to speed quickly (like a sprinter), at pitch release.

Why wouldn't everyone go from left side to gain 1.0-1.5 tenths?? Just trying to understand & make sure that her "speed" shows well, without resorting to trickery or witchcraft??

Pickle, all of the colleges my dd has been to, they had her swing a bat and then started timing from her first step to 1st. Same as home to home. Coaches said they were looking for that explosive first step out of the box and how quickly she gets up to speed (which is never). Also they were looking at her running technique. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, very helpful .... gotta work on that "first step"!! Need more "explosion", more of a glider. The running part comes easy, was an excellent 200/400 runner in Middle School. Covers the basketball hardwood pretty well also.

At two different tryouts my 13u was home to first in 2.83, 2.87, and 2.80. Her home to home best was at the lasers tryout and it was 12.08. Speed is the beas wepon to have.

She must be Rounding the bases a bit wide or running outta gas after 3B ... I have a kid that's Consistently around 3 to first base... but shes at 11.7 to 12.1 Home to Home... seems those 2.8 should get her down in the 11.7 range. Just an observation.

Anybody knows my daughter knew she was not blessed with speed her first 3 years of travel ball. She was average speed at best! This year she breaks her toe and ...........ta-da............instant speed. She stoled more bases this year and became very good at delay steals. Turned in a 2.81 and 2.85 from home to 1st. Didnt catch her home to home time but she was flying there also. I think she finally grew into those big clunkers she calls feet! :lmao:

I told her this upcoming spring if she breaks a finger on her throwing hand she will pick up 3 to 4 mph on her fastball! LOL!

I was hanging out at different tryouts the past couple of weekends and I'd have to say the home to home times they clocked couldn't have been a good indication of the girls true top speeds. Some of the fields I saw most likely haven't been drug in some time and the dirt had settled hard and compacted. A lot of girls couldn't get good bite even in cleats doing the rounding. The few that wore metal did better.

My DD runs Home to 1st in 0.86 seconds and Home to Home in 3.1 seconds. But that's only if I tell her that her cell phone will be taken away if she doesn't react to my demands fast enough. :lmao:

Seriously though, she consistently runs under 12.0 Home to Home, and is always 2.8-3.0 Home ot 1st. I'm hoping she gets faster as she grows into her body, as opposed to the opposite, which I hear some girls do as they get bigger throughout HS years.

Taylor Saxton of the stingrays has been timed 11.2 -11.7. I think shewas 11.4 at the stingrays tryout. Her game speed is off the charts, this girl is a phenom and she has nt turned 14 yet.

I know Larry Canton Last year had some below 12.0 last year at 13U-14U tryouts. She came back to haunt him this year.

Better Yet .......have the boyfriend call in and stand @ first base then tell her he's on the phone. When she get's to first.....throw the phone to your buddies at 2nd, 3rd and home......she'll be running in a frothing fury

Hello Speigleme,
So she lost speed from your post above at 2.25? I'm assuming that was a typo!
If a kid is 2.8 from home to first then they should be in Low 11's going from home to home, unless a parachute opened up going around 3rd (lol).
What team did the kids end up playing on?

Taylor will be playing for Mike Wiley, I believe it is Catons team . I believe she won the home to home at world series in columbus in 11.02.

At Slapper camp at WSU last year they do a dead start from home to first as a sprint. Close to 60 plus kids all fast. Top time was in the 2.7 range, with another 4 in the 2.8 I was with the two in the 2.8 range both played for the Marion Diamonds last year 16U. The other 50 plus were all closer to 3.0 or over. The girl that won it was tall and lanky, which kind of surpirsed most of us. Looking at her you would not think of her as a runner. Been going to this camp for 3 years and it kind of gives you an idea of speed around the state. . It was very good with Coach B, because they went thru all different types of slapping and bunting. Not sure with a new coach if they will have this camp. One problem with the younger girls , most slow down. Mother nature has a habit of making changes. So it is better to look at speed with the older kids, because they will not change as much. Good example was the kid I had a few years back at 14U that was the fastest kid on the team. Three years latter, no longer fast. I'm sure you can understand without me going into detail. Keep this in mind when you coach females.
