Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Screaming(grunting) pitchers

Is there a volume level of a screaming pitcher that can be considered obstructive or unsportsmanlike?

No, but it is a great help for the hitters.
Most pitchers who grunt actually grunt louder when they throw off speed pitches than when they throw their fastball, thus telling the hitter what is coming.

Wondering the same. Probably at the discretion of the ump. See a lot of grunting but not translating more speed so not sure what the purpose is.

I don't see anything wrong with it...you hear tennis players doing it, and they use it in martial arts.

When it's extreme it can definitely be distracting...probably more for the fans than the batters. I remember when my dd started out, she was on a team with a girl who literally screamed with each pitch. I about c-rapped my pants the first few times, lol---had never heard anything like it.

After a while, I couldn't help it...I just literally was laughing out loud every time she did it. I told someone I was sitting with that I thought she'd make some man a very good wife one day. ;&

my dd always said when pitchers do that she could time their pitches.

If they scream at the top of their lungs just to distract the batter here is what you do.... Tell your catcher to do the same, when the ball is half way to home yell at the top of her lungs "NICE PITCH"

The other teams pitch and coach gets the idea and quits..

I definitely think it is meant to be a distraction to the hitters. But, as has been pointed out, sometimes it is an aid for the hitter to time the pitcher.

Personally, I think the grunting is ridiculous. YMMV.

When a batter is truly focusing on where they should be focusing, they won't even pay attention to the grunts and screams. Heck, if the dugout is cheering for their hitter, it tends to drown out the pitcher anyway. Not to sound mean.....but this isn't golf. It's softball and it gets noisy. As long as the catcher is not belting out a blood-curdling scream into the earhole of the batter, causing possible injury to the ear drum, I'm good with it.

I wonder when the first vuvuzela will pop up at a tournament? Nothin' like 130 decibels blaring into your ears.....

:lmao::lmao::lmao: nothin' like gettin' vuvuzelized by an irate spectator.

...and they're so much easier to insert than air-horns.

My daughter is a pitcher and was told by John belighing too grunt, he said and I QUOTE University of NotreDame did a study and came up with finding's that 15% more power when performing if you grunt.

Interesting that some of the best pitchers that team USA had, none grunted that I'm aware of. Hillhouse nor Gillis teach it.

George ... see if you can get a reference or website on this study ... I'd like to read it. My suspicion is that there's some confusion between cause and effect ... i.e., does grunting cause more power, or does more power cause grunting? That sounds bad, huh?

There is a big difference between a slight grunt on release and the annoying, wrongly timed grunt that makes the pitcher look stupid. We played a team where the pitcher yelled(I wouldn't even call it a grunt) at the wrong time on release and them yelled again as the ball was coming over the plate. What is the point? If you are not using it to generate more power than you just look stupid.

Now we're getting closer... The kids who are just "yelling for yellings sake" really don't understand breathing - AND I agree, they do sound very foolish. I would urge them to read up on breathing for martial arts.

Does a boxer hold their breath with their punches? I hope not! Does a football lineman hold their breath when they make a hit? Just WHAT ARE all those noises coming from those linemen just after the snap?

Teach your pitcher to breathe properly = EFFICIENTLY!

P.S. - Softball is NOT golf. If you're kid loses focus because the catcher is talking trash, the pitcher is "yelling" or the crowd is noisy, they should take up a new hobby! Hope they don't ever have to shoot free throws in front of a yelling crowd! Train them to DEAL with distractions.

In martial arts it is called a ki-hap<sp?> or at least that is what it is called in Tae-kwon-do. My DD's were taught to rapidly exhale when expending energy (punching, kicking, etc) for more power. I try to get the DD pitcher to do it when she pitches but she says she won't because it sounds silly on the field....
