Did you ever play sports? Do you still play them? Did you quit playing them because you got "burnt out" on them?

In my experience "burnout" = getting your teeth kicked in, your ### handed to you all the time, and watching the game from the bench a lot because you didn't put the work in when it mattered, usually because your parents were afraid you would "burnout" someday.

From my experience...people don't burn out because they lose or sit on bench. Dick Vermil and john madden didn't quit because they were losing, but stress and doing nothing but one thing which for them was coaching football, caused a burn out.
Kids or parent burn out because they start traveling at age 10 all over US playing ball. They become consumed with one sport and they don't have an outlet. I see kids feeling "burnt out" in college from work load of academic and sport..I see my DD starting at 6AM and not coming into her dorm at 10Pm couple times a week.

I was under the impression we were talking about kids.

Where I live youth sports teams practice for 1 hour 2 nights per week no matter the sport. For some sports 60 of the 120 minute allotment of practice time for the week is spent doing very productive things like static stretching. All of the kids who I have seen "burn out" are pretty much just tired of getting the ### beat off of them by other kids who take it just a little bit more seriously.

It's real obvious in the wrestling program. There will be 80 or 90 kids there when it's a couple of hours of screwing around with your pals and then orange slices and capri suns from the team mom. A few short years later they all "burnout" and the high school team struggles to fill 7 or 8 of the 14 weight classes.

We are talking about kids. Just giving you an example of burn outs in real life experience. My son sucks at wrestling and had his head handed to him for last 4 years and hasn't come close to burning out. Losing doesn't cause burn out rather having no outlet

Example your giving are of kids not caring and quitting.

Their parents would tell you otherwise, and I have a feeling a good many of the people who post here would too.

When you see them and ask them if they are still after it they say "No, he burnt out. He had been doing in since he was __ years old. It was just too much..."

A kid that wrestled while my son was in high school burn out and quit while 14-0 his senior year. It was the 5+ hours the coach wanted him to spend each day on wrestling that burt him out.

A girl that played softball with my dd was on 14U ASA USA National Champs and won a lot of games but burt out and quit the sport after winning nationals. She is now a junior and only plays basketball.

This proves kids didn't quit because they had their a$$ handed to him like you implied. Kids and parent quit for different reasons and maybe term "burn out" is being miss used.

That would be the underlying reason. They can say what they will but being on the receiving end of a beat down is no fun. A lot of kids I know have quit because of it. "Burn out" is the excuse, and that is the reason I said I thought it was a silly idea.

Not even close on that one.... Many high level good quality, winning teams have kids get burned out that have been dragging their tails all over the country for Qualifiers, Nationals, fall, winter, summer ball, school ball and everything in between and realize they want their lives back is all as many have been doing it since ten years old. Losing or winning has Nothing, Nothing to do with it...

You're right. No kid I have ever known who quit anything in my entire life has ever quit for that reason, not even the hundreds who have. I made the whole thing up because ________________________. (just type whatever)

If I was filling in the blank I would pick just to give you something to ##### about, that way you could be happy.

The blank is your crack pipe is empty......

Is that was it is? I'll be damned.

See, I learned a couple of things today. In addition to being the only person in history to have ever met a person who quit playing sports because they weren't very good at them I also found out that I smoke crack. I was completely unaware of both of those things. Thank you for opening my eyes, good citizen.

Who knew you could learn so much from a guy who randomly capitalizes words mid sentence for no reason at all?

I don't think anyone doubts kids/adults quit because they $uck at particular sport...I only disagree this isn't the reason for burnout. Again my son played $occer for 3 years and he stunk, lo and behold he scored a goal and we quit after that game (he went out in style).
