Showcase teams and pick-up players?

I have a question about common practice with subs/pick-up players on the higher level/showcase teams. If you claim to be a "college showcase" team, and you are at a tournament where college coaches are in attendance, would you put in subs to play over your regular roster?

I'm not talking about sub pitchers or catchers, if your team has an injury and you need one of those positions, it is understandable to have members of your team sit while they play in those key positions.

Under what circumstances is this okay? Is it to get the win? To make the team as a whole look better? To show-off certain players?

I'm sure there are reasons for it, but as a parent I'm having a hard time understanding taking a player out of a game, one that paid fees and has attended every practice, to play a girl the coach just met.

I'd say that you have a good reason to sound off.

The only reason pick-up players should be on the field in a "showcase" is if the team was left short-handed of normally rostered players.

Most showcases don't have qualifier-type credentials, so winning the trophy should play second fiddle to exposing the right players to the right colleges.

Trophy hunters; take your game to another tournament instead of sitting your regulars at this important event.

I was dealing with this just this past weekend.

We picked up a player because one of our girls turned her ankle and wasn't supposed to play. We picked up a player to give us 11 girls for the weekend.

Our philosophy is if you pick a player up as a guest player, they play. That doesn't always go over well, but it is the position we have had.

I'll be honest, while I expect my catcher and pitcher DD's to sit because of their positions, if my DD is on a showcase team and she plays any other position and sits while a guest player plays, I would be very upset. I don't have a problem with her sitting while her regular team is out there, but not so a guest player can get playing time. Not on a showcase team anyway.

The circumstances vary wildly. If you are going out of state, seriously out of state such as to Florida, Arizona, or Huntington Beach, it's usually not an issue. Many players on your team will be unable to make the trip and generally you take the bare minimum. If it's a tournament just up the road, I don't know why you would treat the guest any differently that usual. You asked her because you needed the security of her presence. Now if she asked YOU, and you invited her along despite having 11 or 12 players, you got some 'splainin" to do.
