[Softball] Hawks Drop Extra-Inning Thriller in Season Finale

SANTEE, Calif. — The SDC softball team gave the fans quite the experience on senior night and the last game of the year.


The Hawks were a close play at the plate away from winning their first conference game of the year in the last game of the season.


Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks looked to come away with the win. Samantha Campos led the inning off with a single. Angelina Savoldi then sacrificed her at-bat with a bunt to mover Campos over to second. Victoria Harris then grounded out to the pitcher which led to the play that saved the Firestorm.


Joselle Nicolas singled to center field and Campos moved to third and got the green light from head coach Sarah Hershman-McGrath. The throw from center field was just in time to tag Campos at the plate and forced the extra innings.


In the eighth, the Firestorm added two runs for the 6-4 lead. With a runner placed on second, Bailey Romano sacrificed her at-bet to move Nicolas to third. Jordan Neal then hit a deep fly to center field and was 5 feet short from tying the game as the center fielder caught it just before the outfield fence. During the play, Nicolas scored from third on the sac fly to bring the deficit to one.


Kayla Mack then reached on an error from the second baseman before Nicole Whitney's groundout to the pitcher ended the game and season for the Hawks.


SDC lost Game 1 14-4 before falling 6-5 in Game 2.


In Game 1, the Hawks scored all their runs in one inning. Trailing 5-0 in the third, Campos singled home Savoldi for the first run of the game for SDC. Jordan Neal brought the game closer with a 3-run bomb to center scoring Romano and Campos.


The Firestorm added six runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to run-rule the Hawks. Five different Hawks tallied a hit.


Before the drama that unfolded in Game 2, the Hawks grabbed a 3-0 lead after the first inning. SDC scored their first run on a passed ball by the catcher scoring Nicolas. Kayla Mack then hit a sac fly scoring Romano. Neal scored the last run of the inning for the Hawks on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.


ACU then scored a run in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth for a 4-3 lead.


In the fifth, Romano singled home Harris for the tie.


The Firestorm looked to gain a lead in the top of the seventh but the Hawks made two great defensive plays. With runners on first and second, Kaylyn Rubalcava caught a line drive from Taylor Babbitt and turned it into a double play. Neal then collected a comeback and threw out Ashlyn Preciado at first to preserve the tie before the eventful bottom o the seventh and eighth innings.


The Hawks end the season with a 10-32 overall record and 0-20 conference slate. SDC honored Whitney, Campos, Savoldi, and Maritza Martinez in between games during the festivities.
