[Softball] No. 1 USAO Punches Ticket to the NAIA World Series

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The top ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (56-2, 36-0 SAC) and No. 2 University of Houston-Victoria (33-12, 18-3 RRAC) met on Wednesday with a trip to the NAIA World Series on the line. In order for USAO to advance to the World Series, they needed to beat UHV twice, while the Jaguars only needed to top the Drovers once to advance, since they had not yet lost in the Opening Round.

The Drovers won the first game in commanding fashion, taking down the Jaguars 8-2. No. 1 USAO was once again dominant in game two, blowing out No. 2 UHV 12-0 in only five innings, due to the run-rule.

GAME 1 –

The Drovers took an early lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Houston-Victoria cut the Drovers lead in half, by scoring once in the top of the second inning. With the score 2-1, Destinie Lookout (SR/Oklahoma City, OK) blasted a GRAND SLAM to extend the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second inning. USAO once again extended the lead in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of insurance runs. With the Drovers leading 8-1, the Jaguars scored once in the top of the fifth inning. Falon Howell (SO/Duncan, OK) shut down the Jaguars offense for the final 1.1 innings, giving the Drovers the 8-2 win, forcing the winner-take-all elimination game.

Destinie Lookout powered the Drovers offense, going 2-for-4 with a grand slam and six runs batted in. Karlie Velasco (SR/Del City, OK) contributed a 3-for-4 performance, which included three runs scored and a stolen base. Kristen Prieto (JR/Moore, OK) finished the win 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, a double, and a run batted in. Tarah Madron (JR/Konawa, OK) also finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Randa Hatter (JR/Stratford, OK) went 1-for-4 with a RBI, while Dakota Clouse (SR/Blanchard, OK) went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Emily Cerny (SO/Newcastle, OK) pitched the first 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs off of two hits, and she struck out three batters to improve her record to 26-2. Falon Howell was lights out for the final 1.1 innings, as she struck out a trio of batters in relief.

GAME 2 -

The Drovers offense got going early, pushing across four runs in the top of the first inning, followed by four more runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead. Karmyn Pearn (SO/Newcastle, OK) extended the USAO lead to 9-0 in the top of the fourth with a two-out RBI-double to left-center. The Drovers offense rallied for three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the game away for good, before closing the door in the bottom half of the inning.

Emily Cerny pitched all five innings for the Drovers allowing zero runs off of two hits and she struck out three batters. Cerny is now 27-2 with a 0.51 ERA, and she has struck out 266 batters through 178.1 innings pitched this season.

Karmyn Pearn led the Drovers at the dish, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a run scored, and four runs batted in. Destinie Lookout stayed red-hot going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI's. Kristen Prieto contributed a 3-for-4 performance which included two runs scored, a double, and a RBI. Tarah Madron continued to produce, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI's. Dakota Clouse went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Keely Kingsley (SR/Oklahoma City, OK) went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Karlie Velasco concluded the win 1-for-3 with a run batted in.

The Drovers will now prepare for the NAIA Softball World Series which will take place in Springfield, MO from May 23-29.
