Okay, okay, okay - check this out, for "tiebreaker" drama.
Last year in the 10u tournament following the indoor season, we lost early and ended up in the loser bracket, and had to win 4 back to back games on Sunday, two straight versus the undefeated team. We made it to the final after a LONG morning, and with the tourney championship and a single NSA World Series birth on the line (HIGH DRAMA for our baby 10u's),
1. we were tied after regulation
2. we were tied after counting runners to third
3. we were tied after counting runners to second
4. we were tied after counting runners to reach base
5. The LAST tiebreaker involved the two head coaches standing at home plate and simultaneously rolling a softball towards 2nd base (bowling style), ... closest to the base won the game. I guess in a century gone by, it might have been pistols, ... or swords?
It took approximately an hour to get to that momentous moment, after counting, recounting, a phone call to the NSA, and a little shouting, etc. The whole time the girls of BOTH teams who had just left it all on the field were doing chants and cheers together, actually becoming friends, while us adults were duking it out over rules and yelling at each other. It was quite a sight to behold. Our team won that tiebreaker, but we gained so much respect for each other in the process that begged them to offer co-awards for qualifying, which I believe NSA did offer. Later we learned it wouldn't be that hard to qualify, we both had solid teams, but at the time it was crazy.
The girls taught us a lot though with the way they handled things, and after all, THEY were the ones who played the game.
