Don't play in those tournaments then dan? The ones that are stay to play are usually the same ones that are over priced to begin with. They clip you a extra $100 on the entry fee and then get at least $50 more on the room? Depending on where your traveling from you can usually find a tournament the same weekend with the same type of exposure for alot cheaper.

Agreed!!!
As long as we're at it, why not explore "drive to play" (must rent the car we tell you to and drive it to the tournament), "eat to play" (must eat what we tell you to, when and where we tell you to), as well as "dress to play" (cannot watch bracket games unless wearing approved clothing purchased at the gate). Another money maker and less offensive approach than "stay to play" could involve hiring pick-pockets and car thieves. As a coach, I would prefer just getting robbed directly at the tournament as opposed to all the administrative hassle of it happening through "stay to play."

unfortunately it seems like a lot of the showcase events are doing it... and if you are planning on that type of schedule you really have no options UNLESS you want to stay at a separate hotel from your team. This is a trend I don't like seeing!! I bet more and more will be doing it in the upcoming years too! YECK!

And the only way really around it is to pay a "fee" to the tournament to stay where you want to. Which can be quite a bit depending on the tournament.

Tom, Didn't Warren try to force a Pay to Play at an Outlaws tournament advertised last year? I could be mistaken, but I believe the penalty was $50 per family, not to exceed $500 per team.

I don't know GD, just ask him directly. Probably get along with Warren as well as I do because we agree on 90% and disagree on 10%... NOT A FAN OF STAY TO PLAY!

I believe PGF has stay to play at all of their showcase, Qualifiers and Nationals. I hate it also...... We haven't been placed in a hotel anywhere near the fields yet and so far they have messed up our reservations for every event....

Hate forced stay to play as well, and would avoid those kinds of tourneys as much as possible. Someone might want to start a list on here of which tourneys require it.

Now I have no issue if a TD partners with a travel agent/hotel coordinator or a specific hotel and refers teams to those contacts, and gets some kind of kickback on any reservations actually made. But don't tell me where I have to stay and try to make me (or the families on my team) pay something to opt out. This is America, and we expect our freedoms!

PGF is serious about it. Here is their hotel policy for PGF Nationals. I took it right off their website.

"Any teams not staying in room blocks through TRAVELING TEAMS? will be charged a housing buyout fee of $1600.00.The eight (8) room minimum must be met for each night of your team?s stay or until you are eliminated from championship play. Any teams not utilizing the minimum of 8 rooms for the tournament will be charged a pro-rated buyout fee of $200.00 per room short of the 8 room minimum.

Only teams that have a returning berth or an invite are allowed to make accomodations at this time. "

The invited teams and returning berth teams get to make hotel reservations right away which leaves the teams that actually qualified for Nationals without hotel reservations in the better hotels. We had to drive around 40 minutes every morning to get to the fields (with no traffic), from a hotel in the hood for 135.00 a night......

I opted out, paid the $200 and stayed with some family friends in Newport Coast which was 30 min away. Absolutely worth it! When you check your team in, coach is required to pay by credit card for the number of rooms (under 8) x $200 immediately before you are cleared to play. Personally, I would just rather them charge what they need to, add a gate fee, and offer a REDUCED rate to the team if you stayed at their hotels. PGF is not the only one doing this though... I see the ASA/USA qualifier we entered this fall is a "stay to play." I've got a feeling this is going to become the norm across the board for all sanctions.

Boys travel base ball does the same thing but their hotel prices from last year were about $35+ more than usual. I would imagine most other sports do this too but my kids only play baseball and softball.

I was wondering about the Stay and Play Event status of the Fall in to Madness tournament. I did not see any penalty listed with the information. How would you enforce a stay and play when most teams are local? I asked this of a PGF tournament last year and my post was deleted and a nasty PM's followed.

I believe they go off the head coaches address and if it's x amount of miles away from the tourney location, then you are required to book hotels
