Switching teams at tournaments

What happens in the following scenario: ?
one team is accepted to an "Invitational" tournament and they decide not to go. ?Another team (completely different team that was not originally accepted into tourney) decides to go in the first teams place without telling anyone that they are going instead. ?When the TD's figure this out (which they would have to be blind not to) what usually would happen?

Not an actual situation - just something that was being tossed around today...

Do you mean that the invited team backed out w/o letting the TD know, and found their own replacement ? MD

If it were me, that team would be ask to leave, because they were not invited. ?The other team would not be invited back.

Also, no refund of entry fees.

As a TD I'd be hacked off. Lot's of What If's could be in play -- Like why they cancelled. But the lack of communication equals lack of respect. That doesn't flush. I'd avoid dealing with that org if at all possable in the future. MD

I think you need more info as to why the other team pulled out. It could be for very good reasons. If it was just lack of respect and disregard for the tournament then you have a problem. However, the TD may just cause himself a big headache by telling the team to get out. It would blow up all of the planning and schedules the TD had done. What about game gaurantees for the other teams (I would rather play than accept a forfiet). Maybe TD should just bite the bullet this year, let the team play and blackball canceling org. for following years. Also, the team that showed up might be an innocent victim and a lot of hacked off parents that would spread the word that you turned them away. It's just an ugly situation. Luckily I've never heard this happening before.

I agree with Ringer.

If there is a problem with one team going and they would like to send another "same aged" team in it's place - it would be respectful to contact the TD to get approval. The TD may have teams on the waiting list that want in that tournament. If they do not have a waiting list they may approve the switch. If I was the TD, I may be upset the first team backed out but I would be totally POed if they tried to pull a switheroo. That's not a good way to develop an organizations reputation.

Let's hope coaches have more integrity than that. It certainly would not set much of an example to show that kind of disrespect especially in a large tournament which would certainly have a waiting list.

What if there was a reason that the "replacement" team wasn't invited in the first place? That's why it is called an INVITATIONAL.

I can really only think of one reason something like this might happen. If TD gave no or only partial refunds after a certain date, irregardless of whether a replacement teams was found. By doing it in the manner described team A could get team B to pay them the full entry fee, team B goes to the tourney and team A essentially gets their refund. Most TDs wouldn't turn team B away. I would agree this would be a little short sighted by team A. You burn one TD who's to say you wouldn't burn another.

Beleive me... If you burn one... You burn them all. I would never reccommend deception for any reason. If team A cannot go... Then ASK if team B can go in it's place.

If you try to do on the side and get caught - don't expect any sympathy from me.
